A visit was made to this home on Monday May 11th 2009. The reason for this inspection was to follow up a report from the service to inform us about a fire in the premises and as a result the residents had to be evacuated overnight. We found that the fire had been contained in the main lounge, the structure of the building was safe but there had been considerable smoke damage that had permeated to the corridors and rooms leading off from the lounge. The residents were safe and being supported and well cared for. We arrived at the home at 14.25hrs and spoke with the manager who was just leaving to visit a member of staff to de brief them as they had been on duty at the time of the fire. The manager informed us that the fire officer had rung them to inform them that they had dealt with the situation very well and done all that they could. At the time of our visit there were six members of staff on duty who had been making areas available for the residents. There were eight residents in the home at the time of the fire who had initially been evacuated to a staff members home just a few doors away from the home until the residents could be accommodated at a day centre in Wymondham. We ascertained that the three respite residents who had been staying in the home had gone home and five residents remained in the home one of whom had to be moved from their room to another room because of smoke damage. We were told by the deputy manager that the two sleep in carers were alerted to the fire at approximately 1.30am. by the activation of the smoke alarms. The staff believe that the fire started in the television in the main lounge. There were up to date fire training records in place as were recent PAT test records for electrical equipment. All the staff were managing the situation well and taking steps to ensure that the residents and staff were supported by offering therapeutic support and counseling for the staff especially for the two carers who had been on duty when the fire broke out. Whilst the main lounge is out of action other rooms have been made available for the residents for social purposes. We noted that all fire zones were back in working order and that the service had a safe electricity supply. We also noted that a window that had been broken by the firemen to gain access was going to be repaired. We were told that the residents were being taken to the coast out for a fish and chip supper.
