Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The last key inspection of Auburn Mere was in October 2008 when it was assessed as a two star service, achieving good care outcomes for the people who live there. For this annual service review we have looked at all of the information that we have received about Auburn Mere since then. This information has included the completed annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) submitted by the service in September 2009. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well care outcomes are being achieved for the people that live in Auburn Mere. It also provides some useful statistical information for example about staff training and complaints. We also sent out surveys to people living in Auburn Mere, to staff working in the home and to health care professionals associated with the home. The surveys received already have been used in writing this review, any received subsequently will be recorded and assessed and used in the future regulation of Auburn Mere. We have also received notifications from the home about significant events during the period since the last inspection. When writing this review we have also taken account of any information received from people associated with Auburn Mere in any way, for example relatives of people living there or health and social care professionals involved with people living in Auburn Mere. Auburn Mere has successfully applied for a major variation to their conditions of registration to enable them to admit people who are living with dementia. The application process, carried out by the registration inspectors of the CQC involved a visit to the home and an assessment of their capacity to provide a good standard of care for people living with dementia. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA that we received from the home was especially well completed. It was detailed and comprehensive and made realistic assessments under each care outcome heading, setting out clearly not only what had been achieved well, but also areas that could be improved and how this was to be done, for example by making sure care staff have the time they need to enable them to keep care plans up to date and to improve medication training for senior care staff. Surveys we received from people living in the home were overwhelmingly positive; cleanliness, beautifully kept grounds and kind staff was one persons assessment of what the home does well. Another noted Everything is done with care and consideration. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 We received positive comments from health care professionals who returned surveys to us and very positive comments by staff who work in Auburn Mere. One of these said; The atmosphere makes it a lovely place to be at all times for staff and residents Another member of the staff team said that I always look forward to my shift. As noted above it is a positive reflection on the standard of care that can be provided for people living with dementia that the CQC has varied Auburn Meres registration to allow them to admit people under that category. None of the information we have received since the last key inspection of Auburn Mere in October 2008 has caused us to revise our opinion of the service, which is that it provides good quality care outcomes for the people who live there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are currently intending to carry out another key inspection of Auburn Mere by October 2010. However, as is the case with any registered care service, we can carry out an inspection at any time if we receive information that suggests that is necessary. We will continue to collect and receive information about Auburn Mere in the meantime and this will be assessed and reviewed, with appropriate regulation activity taken as required.
