What the care home does well The service continues to achieve excellent outcomes on the standards of care it offers residents. Aylsham Manor is an old manor house and is furnished to complement the age and situation of the building. Residents have various sizes of bedroom and have the opportunity to furnish it how they wish. The majority of residents have their own personal possessions around them. One of the proprietors who also manages the home on a daily basis continues to maintain an excellent standard of documentation, care records, policies and procedures. The complaints records were looked at and these showed how the proprietor deals with concerns, to balance these the home has also received a high proportion of compliments on the standard of care that is offered. What the care home could do better: There was one opinion on the length of time the call bell rang before a member of staff answered it, a resident said it sometimes was too long. During this visit to the home the call bell was answered within a few minutes each time it rang. Staff said this did happen when they were all taken up with assisting residents with personal care and it was difficult to leave and answer another bell straight away. The proprietor was to look into this. There are 24 single bedrooms, two sheltered flats and one double room. Many of the rooms have en suite facilities and communal space is plentiful and varied. There is a stair lift to the first floor in the main house and a stair lift to the first floor in the coach house. The grounds are large and well maintained and provide a very good facility in the summer months. The cost of care and accommodation is from £480-£560 a week. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: The purpose of this visit was to check that residents were continuing to receive excellent standards of care following on from the last key inspection carried out in 2007. During this visit, a residents meeting had commenced and the Inspector was invited to join the meeting in the main hall. The proprietor was chairing the meeting, guiding residents through the agenda for discussion. Topics included meals, menu items, and serving times for meals. As well as arranging trips and future activities, each resident was given the opportunity to discuss their views and give their opinion. This showed an excellent example of how residents are included in decision making within this residential setting. A general tour of the building was undertaken with both the proprietors, who pointed out areas of recent refurbishment. There has been an addition of a small new wing at the rear of the building, with the restructuring of five bedrooms to become four larger rooms that include en-suite facilities, as well as a new lounge/dining room with access to the rear enclosed garden. The fire doors have recently been upgraded to comply with fire regulations, and the call bell system had been replaced. The proprietors have plans to completely refurbish the hall and secure the rear garden within the next month. There were twenty seven residents living at Aylsham Manor and five residents, one visitor and two members of staff were spoken to during this visit. There were no complaints or concerns regarding any feedback from the people who were spoken to, with the majority stating Aylsham Manor is a good residential home. Staff pull together and work well as a team, staff are trained to a very competent level. Staff are very kind and are good to visitors. Sometimes there is a delay in answering bells. I like how I can always find someone to talk to, and the tea and food is very good. I enjoy the activities. There were adequate numbers of staff on duty to care for the number of residents currently living at the home.
