It is approximately 15 miles from Plymouth, which is accessed by the A38 that runs past Ivybridge. There are two separate entrances into the grounds with driveways leading to the main doors and limited parking spaces. The building has been extended to the rear and side of the main house that provides additional single and double room accommodation at ground and mezzanine floor Annual Service Review Page 2 of 6 levels. There are twenty-six single rooms, three with en-suites and five double rooms. The home has good provision of services for people with physical disabilities such as Parker baths, hoists and a shaft lift from the first to the mezzanine floor. Several steps are encountered to progress further to the 1st floor. The homes primary registration is to meet the needs of elderly people with a dementia or mental disorder. It employs qualified nursing staff to lead the Social Care staff to achieve this aim. The homes design provides two lounges and two dining rooms where recreational activities can take place in addition to their main functions. There is now also a brick built conservatory linking both lounges creating a level walking area for ambulant service users. Several of the Service Users rooms are very large providing space well above the required minimum space. A hotel style kitchen produces the meals for all the Service Users. The home has set its fee, at this point in time, at £620 including the funded nursing care contribution. There are separate charges for such things as hairdressing, chiropody and personal items such as clothing. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? Beaconville Nursing Home was previously inspected in March 2008 and was judged as providing good outcomes to the people who live there. For the purpose of this Annual Service Review we looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: 1. The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. 2. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. 3. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. 4. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. 5. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. 6. Relevant information from other organisations. 7. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they would like to make. With regard to changes that have been made over the past 12 months, the Registered Manager said in the AQAA, We introduced a two sitting meal system to ensure all residents receive the time and attention they need to enjoy their meal and have a good dietary intake. We looked at the menus provided and introduced a greater choice based on current nutritional guidance. We are in the process of introducing food moulds to improve the appearance of meals for those requiring a soft diet. All staff recently undertook specialist training in Nutrition and Dysphagia in Dementia. This has improved our understanding of swallowing difficulties and ways in which we can maximize calorific intake for vulnerable residents. We have implemented additional aids for some clients following this training such as Pat Saunders straws. Our chefs are introducing the soaking method so that all foods can be made suitable for soft dietary requirements and that additional calories can be added easily where needed. And in recognition of the need for an increased variety of meaningful activities we have employed a full time Activities Leader who is due to start at the end of January 2010. We have increased our staffing levels to better meet the needs of our residents. Both the registered manager and the deputy manager are undertaking a Degree course Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 in Dementia Care with Bradford University enabling them to bring dementia care expertise directly into the home. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 3rd March 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
