What the care home does well People are only admitted to Beech House following a pre admission assessment. This makes sure the home can meet their needs. Care plans are individual and detailed and contain good information required by staff to provide care and support to people who live at Beech House. Medication administration, recording and storage is in line with good practice. People spoken to were happy with the care provided at the home. Observations of staff interaction with people living at the home were professional at all times. Staff were heard to speak politely and respectful to people throughout our visit. The home is well maintained providing a comfortable place for people to live. What the care home could do better: We did not make any requirments at this visit. We did suggest that the manager could have considered that the respite admission self medicates if they are assessed as being able to do so. This would promote their independance as the intention is that the person conerned will be returning to live in their own home. Random inspection report

We carried out an unannounced visit to the home to meet the new manager and to monitor the homes progress since our last inspection in August 2009. We looked at three peoples files including pre admission assessments and care plans. These people had all moved in to the home since our last visit. One persons file we looked at was on a respite visit, this means that they are staying in the home for a short period of time. We found that pre admission assessments had been carried out in all cases and that care plans had been generated. All of the pre admission assessments and care plans were detailed and described the care needs of the individuals and how they should be met by staff. Care plans were reviewed and in one case it was evident that the home is working closely with other health care professionals with regard to pain control management. Medication, administration, recording and storage were checked for the three peoples care records we looked at. These were found to be satisfactory. We did discuss with the manager whether she had thought about the possibility of the respite person self medicating, as the plan is for this person to return to their own home. There was no reason why this could not have been promoted, following assessment of their ability to safely manage their own medication upon admission. The manager acknowledged this point. The manager told us some training for staff has taken place since her appointment and that training for fire and moving and handling is booked for this month. Although there are some staff vacancies at the home we are confident these are being covered with the homes bank staff. Vacancies are once again being advertised in an attempt to fill the posts. The home was clean and tidy and the manager reported there had been no formal complaints since her appointment. What the care home does well:
