What the care home does well This service was last inspected in September 2009 and was found to be providing a good quality service. This inspection report should be read to gain a fuller picture of the service provided. This has been a serious event , but the director has cooperated with the final parts of the investigation, and has taken the appropriate action to redress the concerns and to improve the quality of care. What the care home could do better: The director has already submitted a comprehensive action plan to us, therefore we have not issued requirements or recommendations in respect of each individual issue. We do however want a full report to be submitted after three months (end of May 2010). The following areas are where the home have needed to make improvements and where they could do better : 1. The quality of recordings in each persons daily records, must accurately reflect the care given. Any decision making processes must be justified. All entries must be signed and dated/timed. 2. Any other communication/ shift handover books must be bound - all entries must be signed and timed 3. All senior staff must be aware of the home`s policy in respect of seeking medical advice. 4. Medical advice must be sought within a timely manner to ensure best possible treatments for people. 5. Accurate records to be kept of contacts with surgeries/ GP`s/District Nurses/other healthcare professional. The records to be accurate, signed and times/dated. 6. Staff to be more pro-active about asking GP`s/DN`s about practical steps they can take to monitor peoples health conditions. 7. Shift handover process to be strengthened 8. Additonal staff to be recruited to fill rota. There needs to be greater leadership of the staff team at the weekends. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We visited Belvedere Lodge along with Mr Howard jones, Planning and Commissioning Manager for Adult Social Care, Bristol Council. We undertook this visit to discuss with a director of Ablecare Homes and the home manager, the issues that have come out of a recent safeguarding investigation. The director had already prepared an action plan and told us about the actions taken so far. Disciplinary meetings had been held with some staff where their conduct had not been satisfactory. They have put systems in place to audit the home on a regular basis and a senior manager will visit the home on a regular basis (two or three times a week) , to ensure that good quality record keeping is maintained to reflect the care given and the needs of the person What the care home does well: What they could do better: If you want to know what action the person responsible for this care home is taking Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 following this report, you can contact them using the details set out on page 2.
