What the care home does well People are happy living at the home. They enjoy their food, they like the staff and they feel that their needs are met. Some of the things people told us were: `The staff are competent, friendly, thorough and show so much care and personal attention to us at all times`, `the home is not institutionalised`, `we have fortnightly films, music and songs, bingo and quizzes - there is always something to do`, `caring professional staff, clean and pleasant environment, a bar area where I can get a glass of wine before lunch and art classes`, `the home has given me a feeling of security, peace of mind and it is an ideal place of friendship - its turned my life around`, `they do just about everything well` and `everyone at the home is smashing and I have nothing but praise for everyone who works here`. Relatives of people who live at the home are happy. They feel that the staff communicate well with them and that they are welcome at the home. They feel part of the life at Brinsworth House. The staff are happy working at the home. They feel well supported, trained and equipped to care for the people who live there. Some of the things they told us were: `The home really cares for the residents who live here`, `the staff support each other and it is always such a happy place`, `the nursing care is excellent and nothing is too much trouble for the nurses`, `I am proud to be part of the team at Brinsworth`, `the ethos is to enable residents freedom to express their individuality within a community framework`, `we have close contact with friends and families, I have worked here for many years and I enjoy being part of the team at Brinsworth` and `the home is well managed`. The manager has an excellent knowledge of the home and the people who live and work there. She makes sure the home is always well run and that people`s individual needs and wishes are met. She listens to the views of people who live at the home and their representatives through regular meetings, annual quality surveys and an open door policy for communication. People who live at the home are well informed. What the care home could do better: The manager has a good overview of the home and the changes needed to continue to offer a quality service. She has plans to update records and procedures and to improve the kitchen facilities and equipment. She told us that she has listened to the things that people who live at the home want and has made improvements where they have requested. The home provides care to people with a past involvement in the entertainment industry or to their dependants. Brinsworth House is a large detached property set in its own grounds and located close to local community facilities and public transport networks. As part of the inspection we made an unannounced visit to the home on 16th June 2010. We met the manager, people who live at the home and staff on duty. We looked at the environment and the way in which people are cared for. We wrote to the manager and asked her to complete a quality self assessment. We wrote to people who live at the home, their visitors and staff and asked them to complete surveys about their experiences. We found that the home was welcoming and that there was a friendly atmosphere. People are happy living there and feel that they are well cared for. The staff are happy working there and feel well supported. The building is nicely maintained and the home was clean and fresh throughout on the day of our visit. What the care home does well:
