Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: We carried out this inspection to check whether the provider and acting manager continue to provide good outcomes for people using the service. Before the visit, we checked whether there have been any changes to how the home is run. A new manager has recently been appointed and has made application to register with the Care Quality Commission. We also checked information that has been shared with us by other professionals with an interest in the service, as well as any surveys returned to us. An Annual Quality Assurance Assessment for this inspection year was not available at the time of the visit. An unannounced visit was made on 27 May 2010. During the inspection we spoke with the acting manager and some of the people using the service. We checked the condition of the premises and verified whether requirements set following the last inspection had been complied with. Ms Robertson worked with the inspector in a positive, constructive and open manner, and provided every assistance in facilitating the inspection. The premises are safe and well maintained. People have access to their own bedrooms all of which have been personalised in line with their preferences and interests. Assisted bathing facilities are provided to help people retain as much independence as possible when bathing. Toilets are clean and hygienic. The lounge and dining areas are domestic in appearance and pleasantly decorated. The homes furniture and fittings, including the kitchen, are of a good standard. Food cupboards are well stocked and contained fresh food. No health and safety concerns were identified. Negotiations are currently taking place to secure a new provider for the home. The uncertainty caused by this potential change has led some of the longer serving staff to seek employment in other services run by the current provider. The acting manager reported that she is in the process of building a stable staff team and is hoping shortly to fill current vacancies. Two experienced and long serving members of staff are supporting the acting manager in this process. There are always a minimum of two staff on duty throughout the working day. A member of staff sleeps over during the night time period. Part time staff and bank staff known to the home are working extra shifts to cover shortfalls in the rotas. Staff are polite, courteous and respectful. The arrangements for keeping people safe were checked. The acting manager demonstrated a good understanding of how to keep people safe. Ms Robertson knew who would need to be notified in the event of an abusive incident and what records should be kept. Ms Robertson is in the process of making sure that all staff have completed local authority safeguarding training in addition to the awareness training they have already completed in-house. Requirements set following the last inspection have been met. The rear conservatory ceiling has been repaired. The walls have been redecorated and heaters fitted. This means that the conservatory area is now a more useable space. What the care home does well: The home is safe, clean and well maintained.
