What the care home does well This service continues to provide an excellent standard of care to the people who live there. Staff training is given a high priority to ensure that they are able to meet residents needs and they have access to a nurse educator once a week who supports and teaches them. Turnover of staff is very low which helps to provide continuity and familiarity for residents, who told us " staff are so kind" and "so caring" " nothing is too much trouble". Since we last inspected the service they have become accredited with the Gold Standards Framework, an initiative which helps to support people and their relatives at the time of their death and ensure that their preferences and wishes are taken into account. Residents told us that they are free to choose how they spend their days and that there are lots of activities organised for them if they want to join in. They also benefit from the services of a physiotherapist and an aromatherapist who visit. They said the meals are very good, there are always choices and that they could always ask the chef forsomething different. Residents told us that if they were unhappy about anything they would tell the manager and it would be sorted out. The registered provider visits on most days and he also spends time talking with them and their relatives and would be available should there be a problem. The current manager was registered earlier this year although had worked in the home, as the deputy for some time and she is keen to encourage new ideas which help improve the lives of the residents. What the care home could do better: We did not raise any concerns at this visit or issue any requirements. From the information that we have we consider that the service is still providing excellent outcomes for the people who live there. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This report follows an unannounced visit to the service undertaken as a part of our inspection programme. Our last key inspection had been in April 2007 and, at that time, we had judged that the service was providing excellent quality outcomes for the people who lived there. We have not received any information, or complaints since that time that has made us change our opinion. Surveys that we sent out to residents and their relatives had all provided us with positive feedback about the home. People told us that it was well managed, comfortable and the staff were very friendly. The home sent us their annual quality assurances assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it and it gave us all of the information that we needed, told us about the improvements that they had made and about their plans for the future. When we visited, we saw that residents looked well cared for and comfortable. One lady was celebrating her birthday and was surrounded by balloons and cards and several people were happy to chat with us about the home and what it was like to live there. A barbecue was being prepared for the lunch time meal, as the weather had improved, and a fashion show and opportunity to buy new clothes had been arranged for the afternoon. A new laptop has been purchased and we were able to see pictures of trips out that residents have enjoyed. A visit to the seaside is now being planned. When we walked around the home we could see that it is well maintained and that an ongoing redecoration and improvement programme is in place. Since we were last there a new shower has been installed and a ceiling hoist has been purchased so that more people can use the bath rather than shower if they wish. There were sufficient staff on duty to meet residents needs and there was evidence to show that a robust recruitment process is in place. This includes appropriate checks to ensure that those who have been judged as being unsuitable to be working with vulnerable adults are prevented from doing so.
