What the care home does well The service provides a very homely, welcoming and comfortable environment. Residents were supported to engage in meaningful and stimulating activities; for example, two people attended to their own personal gardens within the main communal garden, in accordance with their own interests and wishes. There was a wide range of activities to choose from, such as monthly pub nights, bingo, (which we observed on the first day of this inspection) visits to tea dances and ten pin bowling, karaoke and flower arranging. A hairdresser visited once a week and the activities co-ordinator provided manicures. There was a good understanding of how to support people that did not want to take part in group activities. A significant number of residents chose to attend religious services at the care home or make their own arrangements to attend a place of worship. We were informed of a number of day trips to local places of interest, picnics in the park and the seaside. The service had introduced a new daily activity called `The Daily Sparkle`. This was an activities/nostalgia orientated newsletter, which was provided every day to all residents that expressed an interest. It contained features such as puzzles and short articles for personal reading and/or group discussions. There was also a monthly newsletter, which updated residents and relatives about planned outings and proposed changes (for example, new staff to be recruited or refurbishments). We commented on the quality of this newsletter; for example, the deputy manager provided a very interesting account of his professional and social history. The service had participated in a borough-wide project (OPERA) to promote mobility and physical activity for older people in residential and nursing homes. Although this project (provided by the Primary Care Trust) was due to soon finish, Cranvale had made arrangements to continue with the aims of OPERA through employing a physiotherapist for a weekly group activity session. The care plans were well written and up-to-date, reflecting the holistic needs of the residents. No concerns were identified in regard to residents accessing community health care; it was noted that some staff had received specific training from external professionals, such as the visiting district nurses. The checking of medications and associated records (medication charts, temperatures for storage and medication guidance) identified that the system was very safely maintained. Residents stated that they liked the food service and were offered choices, including home baked cakes and puddings. What the care home could do better: No requirements or recommendations have been issued in this report. We pointed out a couple of minor issues within the care plans, which were discussed with the registered manager.
