What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last Annual Service Review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was completed by the manager and sent to us prior to this Annual Service Review (ASR). The AQAA is a self assessment tool that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by 8 residents and 4 representatives (relatives, carers and advocates) and 6 staff. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The last key inspection of this service was undertaken on 30th June 2008. Through the AQAA the manager told us that the following improvements have been made since the last inspection: Provided more activities for the residents by employing a dedicated activities coordinator to work with residents on a weekly basis. Assessed residents mental capacity to make decisions. Improved the decoration and furnishings inside the home. To include the refurbishment of the ground floor office, a new bathroom, replaced a number of floor coverings and purchased new furnishings to include new dining room furniture, new seating, new beds, a new television, a new Stand Aid and a hoist. Improvements to the outside of the home include a new roof, the home has been repainted, new benches purchased and hanging baskets provided to make the outside more attractive. Recruited a full time Administrator to keep up with the demands of paperwork. Eight people who live at the home completed surveys for us, seven people had the assistance of a close relative or a member of staff who works at the home but does not provide direct care. They told us that they receive the care and support they need, that staff are always or usually available when they need them and that staff listen and act on what they say. Residents also told us that they get the medical care they need, Annual Service Review Page 4 of 8 that activities are made available and that they enjoy the meals provided. All eight residents said that the home is always fresh and clean. Residents told us that the home does the following well: Gives a very good standard of care Everythings fine, Im very happy living here Does everything well They look after me very well, it is very homely and comfortable The home provides very good care. The carers are very cheerful and have my relatives interests in her safety and happiness There is good personal care and regular monitoring of the health and wellbeing of the client. Changes are made where appropriate and all found to be positive in my opinion with the well-being of the client Four representatives of people living at the home completed surveys for us and their comments were very positive. In response to the question what does the service do well they stated: The home provides excellent care of my mother; the staff and matron are very supportive. There are many therapeutic and stimulating classes to include exercise to music, art and massage There is personalised attention to care. Im happy with the service provided by Danesford Grange care home They look after my husband extremely well If I ever had to go into a home, I would want to come here We asked people what the service could do better and we received the following comments: Nothing, the home have met every criteria I have asked I cant think of anything Cut and clean nails regularly Nothing really, Its lovely here, Im settled and happy Cut down documentation to enable more time spent on residents I would like to have more variety of sandwich fillings They do everything they can but they have not got time to do extras. I understand they are busy but I would like to be able to walk around more
Annual Service Review Page 5 of 8 I would like to see more done for our EMI and dementia residents for example a nice garden and sensory room We received surveys from six staff and their feedback was very positive. Staff told us that they are always given up to date information about the needs of the people they care for, that recruitment checks are robust, that they receive training that is relevant to their role, helps them understand and meet the individual needs of people they care for and keeps them up to date with new ways of working. They reported there are usually or always enough staff on duty. Their comments include: I really enjoy working at Danesford, I have a very good manager and there is good management in the office. We have regular training and we take our residents out regularly. I feel we do a good job taking care of our residents in a lovely home which has had lots of improvements made to it. I hope I am still working there in my 70th year. I love it The home has improved greatly under matron Jo Thomas... The home is welcoming to everyone and considers everybodys needs. They offer lots of training to everybody building on their confidence and knowledge within the job The care of the residents is very very good The general care has improved tremendously over the last few years The home provides trained staff who are capable of looking after all of the residents regardless of their condition, race or sexuality The home reports that 90 of the care staff hold a national recognised qualification known as NVQ at level 2 or above in Care or Health and Social Care and in addition to this 3 staff are nearing completion of a Team Leading qualification. All the domestic staff hold an NVQ level 2 in cleaning science and infection control. A senior nurse has also completed a mentoring course in Palliative and End of Life Care and teaches this to the care staff. We have not received any correspondence or concerns from the Environment Health Department or the Fire Department about the service in the last twelve months. The manager notifies us of any event that occurs that affects the health and wellbeing of the people living at the home. The AQAA states that the service has only received one minor complaint since December 2007. This clearly indicates peoples continued satisfaction with the service the home provides. Feedback in surveys completed by residents evidence they are aware of the formal complaints procedure and know who to speak to if they are not happy with the service provided. We have not received any concerns or complaints about the service since the last inspection and there have been no referrals or investigations under safeguarding adult procedures. The last key inspection of Danesford Grange concluded that people living at the home
Annual Service Review Page 6 of 8 receive good outcomes. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home continues to provide a good service to the people living at the home and have made numerous improvements in the best interests of the people living and working at the home. The AQAA identifies areas for continued improvement. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We think the quality of the service might have improved since the last key inspection. We will do a key inspection by 29th June 2010 to review our assessment of the home. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 7 of 8 Reader Information
