Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people living at the home. It also gave some numerical information about the home. What the home has told us about things that have happened there, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Surveys completed by seven of the people who live there, some of whom were helped by their relatives to complete these. The previous key inspection report of 4th March 2009. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their AQAA when we asked for it. The AQAA told us about how they have made improvements since our last visit to ensure the best outcomes for the people who live there. For example, since our last visit improvements have been made including: They have invited the families and advocates of the people living there to meetings so they can ask their opinions about their home and what needs to be done to improve it. They have a staff message book that are staff are expected to read. This helps them to keep updated with any changes to peoples care plans so they know how to support people to meet their needs. Two staff give out medication and both sign to say it has been given to reduce any mistakes occurring so to help meet peoples health needs. Care plans are more detailed, include all the needs of the person and are easy for staff to follow so they know how to support individuals. The complaints procedure has been updated. The people living there and their families have had this explained to them so they know how to make a complaint if they are unhappy about anything in the home. Replacing carpets and redecoration of the home has been ongoing. The chairs in the dining room and in some bedrooms have been replaced. This makes it more homely and comfortable for people to live in. Staff have supervision more regularly so they are supported in their role and know how to support the people living there. The home told us about improvements they are currently undertaking or plan to do in the next twelve months. They plan to include more detail when assessing people Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 before they move into the home. This will help to ensure that they know the persons needs can be met there. To continue to maintain and build good relationships with other professionals including practice nurses and GPs so they know how to meet peoples health needs. To organise day trips for people who would like to go and encourage people to go to clubs if they want to. This will help people to enjoy a meaningful lifestyle. To introduce more fresh fruit so helping people to have a nutritious diet ensuring their well being. Continue to train staff so they know how to safeguard the people living there from harm. To ensure the conservatory is not used only for storage but encourage the people living there to use this more often, so they have more variety of rooms to spend time in. To keep up to date with new legislation and regulations so they can ensure that the home meets these and the home is run in the best interests of the people living there. People living there told us, The home and staff are very good and I enjoy staying here. The home does everything well. Very homely atmosphere, staff are excellent, well run home, food is very good. Top care home! They look after residents well and always chat to everyone. Entertainment is good and the BBQ in the summer was excellent. The home does everything well, I am well cared for. I can find no fault with the home, I am looked after with care, kindness and respect. I feel warm, loved and comfortable. I have a choice to join in activities or just relax if I want. Relatives said, As a family we dont have to worry because we are informed by the manager of everything that is going on with our relative. All their needs are met. They are very happy in the home. Staff show concern. People were asked if the home was fresh and clean, five people responded to this saying always and two people responded that it was usually fresh and clean. There has been two complaints about the home, one of which was being investigated at the time of writing this report. The first was made in June 2009 and the investigation by the provider showed that no regulations had been breached. The home tells us about important things that happen to people and show that they manage issues well. We looked at the information available to us and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and they know what further improvements they need to make. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 4th March 2012. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people who live there.
