1017092009Eastcliffe is a very large detached domestic house, which was built during the turn of the 20th century. The home had been registered as a care home for the elderly up until April 2002 at which time the registration ceased. Autism North has completed considerable refurbishment works to Eastcliffe prior to its registration in July 2004. Eastcliffe is registered to provide personal care for young adults who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. All of the current residents pay fees of #2096 per week; however the amount the person pays will depend upon the financial assessment completed by social services. Each person?s social services department pays the majority of the weekly fee. The home has three floors. The nine bedrooms are located over the three floors, lounges, dining room, kitchen and laundry are located on the first two floors. The staff room, office, regional manager`s office, and facilities for visitors are located on the third floor. A sloped drive leads to the main entrance to the home and a large yard is at the rear. People with a physical disability could not be admitted to the home, as they cannot get to all of the communal rooms. Steps lead from the main entrance up to the dining room and lounge. A second lounge and toilet are adjacent to the front door and prior to these steps. A lift provides access to two floors but there are mezzanine landings throughout the home. Eastcliffe is located just up from the main road running along the sea front at Roker, Sunderland. It is opposite a large park and close to shops and local entertainment. Bus routes to Sunderland and South Shields are located on the main road close to the home.

What the care home does well People can take as long as they need to decide if they want to live in the house. People are asked about what they need. And a lot of information is collected before people move in to make sure their needs can be met. The home supports people to have interesting lives and people living at the home are being introduced to new activities and experiences to help them lead more fulfilled lives. People living at the home are supported to learn or renew self help skills to help them become more independent in aspects of every day living. The house is clean and comfortable and well maintained. Staff help people keep in touch with their families. There is a good level of staff training. What the care home could do better: A policy should be provided about the use of the intercom which is used for the safety of the service user with epilepsy,this should be balance with the person`s privacy. The monitor should not be plugged in a communal area where all can hear it but should rather be kept either on the person or in a less public place. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: An unannounced visit to the home took place on May 27th 2010 at 3:30pm. Some service users were in at the time of inspection and several staff were on duty for a staff meeting. The premises were well maintained and new furniture and decoration had taken place since the last inspection. People living at the home were relaxing in the lounge after a day at college. One service user was preparing to go home at the weekend for a visit to his family,he told me about the plans for his birthday which he would celebrate with family and also a celebration with friends at the home where he lives. Comments from people at the home include: The staff take me on activities which I really enjoy. I would like to go to the cinema on Saturday. My washing gets done and the staff help me with my activities and give me support. The home could be better decorated. Staff make me smile. The staff take me out on activities of my choice. I enjoy nice activities and staff help me with my personal care. I would like to see my Mum and Dad more often. Staff work well and help us. Staff cater for all my needs. Staff comments include: Staff training is kept up to date. The home caters for everyones individual needs. Could be larger maintenance team ,more re-decoration and new furniture. We are good at assessing each service users needs on an individual basis and plan activities according to their needs,choices and abilities. We offer all service users a safe, clean and comfortable place to live. Staff support each and every service user to live a happy life. We promote individuals independence as much as possible. A fantastic organization to work for,support is excellent for staff and service users. Listens to the individuals needs and follows their care plans. Meets the clients dietary needs.
