Commission for Social Care Inspection Reports for this service are available from the provider or can be obtained from www.csci.org.uk Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: We looked at the records of three of the people who live in this home and we talked to the manager and the staff about their care. The manager told us that those three people had skin care issues that had been identified within the last month. We saw and heard that those issues had been addressed as soon as the problems had been identified. We saw that staff from other homes owned by the provider were there providing help in reviewing care plans, risk assessments and the general administration of the home. We also found that senior nursing staff from those homes were also supervising the practice of recently engaged agency nurses as part of their induction process. We were told that agency nurses were being used as a number of the regular staff had recently left and those vacancies were not yet filled. Without those agency nurses the home would not have been able to meet the needs of the people who live there. The manager told us and looking at the recruitment records showed that this recruitment process was under way with a number of nurses waiting for their background checks to be completed before they could start work and others being interviewed the week after this visit. During this visit one of the recently interviewed nurses came into the home to present her supporting documentation for her Criminal Records Bureau check. This check is required to make sure tha people who apply to work with vulnerable people are fit to do so. We also saw that a number of care staff were also waiting for their background checks to be completed so that they could start working at the home. We spoke to a number of the care staff and they told us that they had covered for any vacancies themselves, where they could, as they thought it was more reassuring to the people who live in the home to be cared for by staff that they knew. We talked to the manager who told us that she had only been in post for a few weeks and that she would soon be in a position to apply for registration with the Care Quality Commission. We saw that visits carried out under Regulation 26 of the Care Homes Regulations 2001 had been carried out by representatives of the provider. We also saw that safety checks, such as fire alarm tests, were also being carried out regularly so as to ensure the safety of the people who live in the home.
