What the care home does well We saw that the staff were doing what they could to cope with the staff shortages that had occurred at the home recently. They had also improved their monitoring of the medication systems and storage ensuring that the right people would get medication when they need it. What the care home could do better: The home must maintain an accurate staffing rota to make it clear who may be responsible for any actions at any given time. The home must also have enough qualified, experienced and competent staff on duty to meet the needs of the people who live there. Random inspection report

We looked at the medication records of a number of the people who live in the home and these all appeared to be accurate and complete showing that the right person was getting the right medication at the right time. We walked around the building and looked at a number of bedrooms, the lounge and the dining room. All looked tidy and clean. We talked to one person who was sitting in her room. She had a drink on her table which she was able to reach. Her room looked neat and tidy. We talked to the staff and they told us that there were not always enough of them on duty to meet the needs of the people who live in the home as a number of them had been off sick with remainder of the team having to work longer hours to try to cover for them. We looked at the staffing rota and found it difficult to work out who had been on duty at any particular time. The proprietor told us that it had not been completed as he had instructed and that he would make sure that it was in the future. We looked at the recruitment records and saw that two new staff had started since the last inspection. Their records showed that full background checks had been carried out before they were allowed to work with the people in the home. Those checks were made to make sure, as far as possible, that those people were fit to work with vulnerable people. On the second day of this inspection the proprietor was present. He said that he was aware of the issues that had been found and he explained his plans to improve the service to people who live in the home.
