What the care home does well The service set themselves high standards in terms of the care being provided and this is being delivered in practice. People who use the service told us, "I absolutely love it here, the staff are kind and caring. I am very happy." Relatives commented, "I know they know (my relative), I feel reassured that he is safe. He is confused every day, but they always let me know if he is unsettled. They will do anything. I rate this place very highly and I would recommend it to anybody." We found that, regardless of people`s needs and abilities they are offered choice, their decisions are encouraged and these are restricted only when absolutely necessary. When restrictions are in place, these have been assessed by outside professionals to determine the decisions are in the person`s best interests and appropriate. The relatives we spoke with confirmed, "I think they are good at enabling choice and decision making." When we spoke with the staff we found them to be imaginative and dedicated to enabling people to make their own decisions. "The residents know us well, we use different ways to help people make choices, cards, showing them alternatives. Most people can make some decisions on some level. Most of the people who live here have been here a while so we look at their expressions for clues." We observed the care being given during lunch, people are always asked what they would like, rather than staff assuming they know what people want. We saw lots of very good, caring and supportive practice, the staff put the people who live at the service and their needs first. The service are very, very good at providing things to keep people occupied and entertained. There is a full display of activities in the reception area. People living at the service told us, "I have been doing a jigsaw this morning, I might sit out this afternoon, we go on day trips and there is always something on." Relatives told us, "what pleases me most is there is something going on here every day, the atmosphere is great. They have done the patio up, the (acting manager) sweeps in and gets people out into thegarden, she motivates them and the staff. There are lots of activities and relatives are always included, they are setting up a beach outside, what a great idea!" The staff told us, "we are encouraged to make suggestions and improvements, they always take these on board. We like people to be outside in this nice weather, it lifts them. We are doing outings. I feel I am part of their (the residents`) place, not the other way around." What the care home could do better: We did not find any areas from this visit (other than the registration of the manager) which needed improvement. [Please note access to Ernehale is by James St Arnold.] Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We did this inspection as part of the work we have remaining under the Care Standards Act 2000 before we use the new Law, the Health and Social Care Act 2008 which will mean we work with services in different ways. This service was given a 3 star, excellent rating in 2007, and we have not received any information about the service through complaints, safeguarding or from other agencies such as the Local Authority or the Primary Care Trusts which gives us any cause for concern. However, the registered manager has left since we last visited the service and although a new acting manager has been in post since this time, we have not yet received her application to register with us. This would normally mean a service cannot be given an excellent quality rating. In spite of this issue, our interviews with relatives, people who use the service, the staff they employ and our own observations of the care being provided gives us clear evidence that the service provides a good, reliable service and a high standard of customer care. We have not set a requirement about registering a manager as this will be dealt with legally as part of the new registration process.
