What the care home does well At the initial assessment and during the compilation of the care plan every effort is made to ensure equal care is given to all the people supported with consideration given to their individual choices and and preferences. All the activities are paid for by the owners of the home and some coffee mornings take place to assist with fund raising. There are a number of activities taking place including, craft sessions/painting lessons, gentle exercise and reminiscence/memory sessions. There are also lunches out at the Highcross and `Young and Heart` parties at a local venue that include a three course meal, quizzes, bingo and dancing. An exercise bike is available on one of the landings in the home to encourage good mobility. The majority of people cared for in the home are independent and some are able to go out into the local community by themselves. The home is not purpose built and has been extended providing a homely and pleasant place to live. The owners of the home keep the home immaculate and very well maintained. Furniture and fittings are of very good quality and digital TV`s have been purchased for the bedrooms. A number of the bedrooms have en suite facilities that include either a shower or a bath as well as a toilet. Residents meetings are held two or three times a year providing them with an opportunity to air their views about the home. Staff meetings take place every two months. The majority of staff have been employed at the home for a long time and are very familiar with the needs of the people being cared for. Staff are well trained and there are a high number of staff with a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Care. The NVQ in Care is the nationally recognised qualification required for staff working in social care. 10 staff out of 11 have obtained NVQ level 2 in Care and 1 staff member also has NVQ 3 in Care; a further 2 staff are working towards obtaining NVQ level 3 in Care. The home has achieved the Investors in People award which is a recognised accreditation demonstrating good quality standards and a commitment to staff development. What the care home could do better: The care plan would benefit from some background information and previous social history about the person being cared for to ensure the care is delivered appropriately and to provide a `rounded` picture of the individual concerned. All the people cared for in the home are able to follow their hobbies and interests and this needs to be formally recorded as part of their care plan alongside their personal care needs. As well as physical requirements, emotional/psychological needs and wishes should be recorded and reviewed once a month as part of the care plan. Random inspection report

The site visit was unannounced and focused on key standards with regard to Health and Personal Care and Protection. Various documents were examined belonging to the people cared for and staff. The registered manager completed the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment prior to the site visit that provided some statistical information and how well the home was meeting standards of care. Prior to the site visit surveys were provided to the persons cared for in the home and staff; their views and comments have been taken into account. The assessment leading to a care plan looked at every aspect of physical need and how those needs can be met with as little risk as possible to the individuals health and safety. Currently there is just one person who requires two staff on occasions for personal care. The medication administration records (MAR) were up to date with no gaps in the records and the registered manager completes regular checks to ensure there are no mistakes. A record had been kept of weight on admittance and then on a regular basis. Staff had received training in medication and health and safety. The manager has an understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and a policy has been devised. The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) was fully implemented in 2008 and has been amended to include the deprivation of liberty safeguards that came into force on the 1st April 2009. The safeguards are in place for any person who lacks capacity and is unable to make decisions for themselves. Any person who lacks capacity can be confident that any decisions made on their behalf will be made in their best interests. There were a number of very positive comments as follows from the people supported in the home when asked what the home does well: Everything is good. Lovely home, good staff. They do everything to a high standard. Staff comments about what the home does well included: I think that every aspect of the work in the home is covered well. A happy place to work. Glengarry Court provides a safe, happy environment for people to live in. All who live here are treated with respect and dignity. All staff are happy to help no matter how big or how small the task. The home is always kept immaculately clean, well decorated and furnished.
