What the care home does well People we spoke with on the day of the visit told us that they are very contented with their lives at Hambleton Court. One person said `they look after us very, very well. I have a lovely room with a patio and its all kept very clean`. This individual has brought some of their own furniture for their room whilst another person said their own telephone helped them to keep in touch with family and friends. Other comments include. `There`s only one standard - absolutely perfect`. Another added `I call this place Buckingham Palace. We`re spoilt to death`. Nobody that we spoke with had any negative comments about the service. They said `the staff are very nice and would do anything for you`. One person said `the food is very good and although I am on a special diet they (the staff) always makes sure I get what I need`.One person told us how the staff supported them to maintain their independence and to provide help at the times they wanted this help. In this way they kept some control of their day-to-day life. We observed staff behaving in a kind and sensitive manner, crouching down when necessary, so they were on the same level when speaking with, and listening to, people`s views and opinions. The two visitors that we spoke with were equally complimentary about the home. Their comments include `we can`t believe how lucky we`ve been to find Hambleton Court` and `they (the staff) can`t do enough for you`. Another added `it`s absolutely fantastic. It`s always very clean and the staff are so helpful`. We were told, and minutes from recent resident`s meetings confirmed, that people living at Hambleton Court get involved in different social activities, which helps to make one day different to another. Theme days, like Valentines Day and St George`s Day are popular as well as craft sessions. A minibus is also used to take peope to events away from the home. People we spoke with told us that they would tell someone if another resident or a member of staff had been unkind or mistreated them. They also said they would tell someone if they were unhappy about anything. It is important that people feel able to report these things as it gives the managers the opportunity to put things right. Neither the home nor the commission have received any complaints in the past year. We spoke with a member of staff who was able to tell us how the way they work ensures people are treated in a respectful manner and people`s dignity is always being promoted. The home carries out their own monitoring, by asking people who live and visit the home to complete questionnaires about how they think the home is running. Comments seen in those surveys matched what we found on the day. One healthcare professional had completed one of these surveys and had rated care, friendliness, cleanliness, response to phone calls and overall impression as `excellent`. We looked at records which would show us whether requirements, made at the last inspection three years ago, have been met. Those records, which included careplans, recruitment records and health and safety checks confirmed that these requirements have been met. What the care home could do better: We asked a care worker what she should do if a person told her that they had been mistreated by another member of staff. The care worker was not totally sure of her responsibility in this situation. All staff must be very clear about the need to report any allegation of mistreatment or abuse promptly, so that it can be properly looked into, in order to keep people safe. Random inspection report

The last key inspection for Hambleton Court took place on 14th May 2007. This is a report on the findings of a random unannounced inspection, which took place on 27 May 2010. For this inspection we considered the following evidence. Information received about the home since the last inspection. Previous reviews completed by the commission. During our visit to the home we Talked to four people living there and to two family members, to get their perspective of what its like to live at Hambleton Court. They also showed us their private rooms. Looked at some of the communal areas there, such as the lounge, dining rooms and conservatory. Talked to a member of staff and observed the general activity in the home, including how staff interacted with people living and visiting there. Talked with the manager about her role and how she is satisfied that the home is being run in the way people want. We discussed the requirements made following the last report, and looked at some of the records the home has to keep to show it is being well run. The registered manager was available throughout our visit, which lasted from 12.00 to 15.00. Both she and the owner were provided with feedback at the end of the visit. The inspection showed that peoples health and personal care needs are being met by a staff group who are well trained and well supported, and who listen to what people have to say. The environment is well maintained, and varied activities help to make peoples day to day lives more interesting. The managers are still looking at ways of improving the lives of people who live there. What the care home does well:
