What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment AQAA that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. We sent 16 surveys to people who use the service and their relatives, 11 to Staff, 4 to Health Professionals and 2 to social workers. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us the AQAA when we asked them to, it contained detailed information about the service, its aims and objectives, staff skill mix and the facilities it provides. Since the last key inspection visit carried out on 27 May 2008 the service has told us what action they have taken to address the concerns we identified during that visit. They have kept us informed of incidents, accidents and events affecting the welfare of people using the service. We have received four notifications of this type. The service has told us in the AQAA that they have good standards of training with 18 of the support staff trained to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 2 or above, but the turnover of staff according to the AQAA seems quite high, 10 have left in the last 12 months. We have sent surveys to people using the service, staff, health and social care professionals. We have received, 14 surveys from people who use the service, one health professional and three from staff. The majority of people using the service said that they had received information about the service before moving in and have written information about their terms and conditions of residency. Most said that they have enough to do and they like the food, but others disagreed. The majority of people said they knew who to go to if they were unhappy and how to make a complaint. We asked people who use the service, what the home does well. Their comments include, There are well cooked pleasant filling meals at the home. There are lots of activities, such as bingo and many outings. Everything. The staff are supportive. Quite sufficient staff. Food, cleanliness, outings and activities. Good staff support Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 when you are feeling low. Most Things. We also asked what the home could do better. Comments include, Nothing. Food. I would like to go on holiday. The food should be changed, due to limited selection and choice. Provide a cooked breakfast. More activities. Comments from staff include, The induction mostly covers everything I need to know and I usually receive up to date information about the needs of people. The manager sometimes gives me enough support and meets with me to discuss how Im working. The ways we share information usually usually works well and there are sometimes enough staff to meet the individual needs of people using the service. We have a good team working for the well being of the people living at Harewood Park. I think it would be hard for Harewood Park to improve on what is already done. The staff surveys also stated that, The organisation is good at organising peoples reviews of care and assessments; is good at delegating tasks to staff and supports staff with NVQ training. But also says, There could be more opportunities for professional development for qualified nurses. We could provide more activities for people. The health professional survey, stated that, the health needs of people using the service are being met and they are supported by the service to attend appointments. The service cares for people well and staff are well trained and knowledgeable. They always adhere to advice. In relation to Equality and Diversity, the service has said that it promotes person centred approaches, provides staff with training and promotes peoples rights. The service is aware of the changes to legislation that affect it ,such as The Mental Capacity Act. And Deprivation of Liberty training is planned for staff. We have not received a complaint about this service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The information we have received has not caused us to change our opinion of the service we continue to consider that this service provides good quality outcomes for the people who use it. We dont intend to change our planned inspection schedule, the next key inspection of this service will take place before 26 May 2010. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
