Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This random visit was carried out following concerns raised by Doncaster contracts officers and the infection control nurse. It was therefore subject to our risk assessment process and as a result it was necessary to carry out a random visit, (Random means we will look at specific areas). The concerns had initially been raised in November 2009 following a visit by the infection control nurse and a contracts officer. They had carried out a number of visits over the last seven months and had told us the standards of cleanliness varied on each visit. The staff team had not continually sustained a satisfactory standard. This visit we joined the infection control nurse and contracts officer and looked at the areas of concern identified by them on previous visits. These were infection control procedures, cleanliness of the premises and staff training in control of infection. The service had its last key inspection in June 2009 and achieved a two star good rating, which means the outcomes for people living at Headingley Park were good. Since this visit the service has changed names from Edlington Park to Headingley Park. A quality rating will only change following a key inspection. Therefore the rating for this service will stay the same following this random inspection. This site visit was carried out on 5 July 2010. It commenced at 14.00 and finished at 16:30. During the visit we talked to two members of staff, two people living at Headingley Park and the registered manager. We also looked at training records, carried out a tour of the building and looked at cleaning rotas. The standard of cleanliness observed during the tour of the building was to a good standard. The issues identified by the infection control nurse had been remedied and systems put in place to ensure the standards were maintained. The infection control nurse and the contracts officer told us, the standard of cleanliness observed, was to a much higher standard than they had observed on any visit in the last seven months. Cleaners were on duty cleaning bedrooms at the time of our visit. We observed the cleaning trolley with cleaning fluids left unattended in the corridor, for long periods of time. The cleaning fluids should be taken into the rooms and not left unattended in the corridors, were people have access to them. This will ensure safety of residents. The manager is developing an action plan and new policies and procedures with the assistance of the infection control nurse. This will ensure staff are aware of correct procedures at follow to ensure the home is maintained to a high standard for people who live there. The manager told us all staff have attended hand washing training and further infection Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 control training is organised. To ensure staff re appropriately trained to meet peoples needs. The manger had successfully completed NVQ level 2 in decontamination in health and social care settings. This showed commitment to ensuring the requirement made by the infection control nurse were understood and met, to ensure people were protected. Cleaning hours had been increased and two cleaners were on duty every day. The standard of cleanliness observed during this visit showed the extra hours had improved standards. The manger told us, The standards will be maintained, a new cleaning schedule has been devised and will be followed. Full feed back was given to the manager at the end of our visit.
