What did we do for this annual service review? The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. formation we have about how the service has managed any complaints. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The last key inspection of Gaston and Dolphin was carried out 21st October 2008. This annual service review was completed 26th October 2009. The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The home continues to have a number of measures in place for consulting with people so that they involved in the running of the home and can contribute to the development of the wider organisation. In the AQAA the manager reports: The people who live at Gaston and Dolphin House are represented at the local scheme Talking Heads group, this group assists the service to look at local issues and ideas and work is taken forward to a regional group. One of the areas that has been looked at is safe access to the local Day Centre. The group have already sought modification to the access to the Centre to make it safer for individuals. Representatives from this group also attend regional Hft forums where key topics are discussed and shared with the organisation. The group is becoming more and more involved with enabling people we support to make decisions. All staff have received mental capacity act training and we have a format designed to assist people in making decisions. Also Hft have a DVD that can assist in everyone understanding. In a questionnaires returned by people living at the home they indicated that they are happy with the support provided by the home. Relatives also commented positively on the service. Their comments included: Provides a friendly atmosphere and homely. Also encourages independence and a very Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 pleasant environment. The staff are always very efficient and thoughtful Cares and provides for my daughter. Keeps me informed of all issues effecting her and helps her to keep in touch with her family. Treats me (and friends and family) who visit my daughter as family There have been no complaints made to us about the home to indicate any concerns about the care provided. Staff are supported to achieve National Vocational Qualifications in care to equip them to carry out their work effectively. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection, where this is necessary and they have shown that they have managed issues satisfactorily. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and as things stand we do not plan to do a key inspection this year. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
