What the care home does well Individual records providing information about peoples` care and support needs are in place. This means that people get the help they need. This small service places emphasis on providing an individualised service that takes account of each person`s needs, choices and interests. The owners are well informed about each individual`s needs and support them to be as independent as possible. Plans are regularly updated to reflect peoples` individual needs. The systems for administering medicines are well organised and protect the people livingin the home. People have access to day services and events in the local community as appropriate to their interests and abilities. They have plenty of choice about social and other activities. Effective systems are in place for dealing with complaints and safeguarding matters. This helps to keep people safe. Each person has his own room that is furnished and decorated to suit their individual taste and interests. People said that they were very comfortable during the inspection. The public areas of the home are well furnished, comfortable and suit the needs of the people living there. As this is a small home with only three people living in it, the owners provide most of the support to them, but assistance is available if needed and this appears to work well. Appropriate training is undertaken and people working in Hilda House are experienced in caring for these people. The owners are aware of the need to follow good recruitment procedures so that people are protected. What the care home could do better: No issues were identified at this inspection. The house is registered to accommodate three residents with learning disabilities, two of whom are over sixty-five years. The house is comfortably furnished and each resident has his own bedroom with en-suite. There is a small enclosed patio area to the rear of the building next to the new conservatory. Hilda House is well situated for local transport links to Berwick upon Tweed with buses passing the door regularly. There is a main line train station in Berwick about five minutes away by car. The owners of Hilda House have a car that residents use regularly. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: This service has an excellent three star rating that was last assessed on 22 June 2007. An annual service review was undertaken on 17 June 2009. This random inspection lasted two hours and during that time we looked at how peoples needs are met, staffing arrangements and complaints handling. Each person has an individual plan in place providing good information about their individual needs and how these are met. It was evident that peoples needs are regularly reviewed and updated as changes occur. Plans show that peoples health care needs are identified and met. The people living at Hilda House have health care checks at the local health centre. Risks assessments are in place and are updated as necessary. People have detailed plans that include information about their hobbies, interests and social activities. They lead active lives and are consulted about how they spend their time. They have regular trips to the caravan that they enjoy as well as attending social activities in the local community. Systems are in place to assist people to manage their medicines properly. There is a policy and procedure for dealing with complaints. The owners are aware of the need to keep detailed records of any complaints, the investigation and outcome. People living in the home said that they are able to talk to the owners if they have any concerns. The owners have completed safeguarding training. The home is clean, comfortable and well maintained. Each person has his own room and is consulted about the decor and furnishings. The rooms show evidence of each persons interests and hobbies. Spacious public areas of the home mean that people have plenty of choice about where they spend their time. Staffing is provided by the owners. Additional staffing is available when needed and the person providing cover knows the people living in Hilda House well. The owners recognised the importance of undertaking regular updating training to ensure tha they have the skills they need. Evidence was available to show that they have completed appropriate training in safe working practices.
