What the care home does well The home has made sustained progress since the last inspection in meeting outstanding requirements. The benefits of a consistent management team is reflected in the care given. What the care home could do better: Although requirements 4 and 5 of the previous report have been met, a new requirement is made in this report to ensure that the exit from the first floor to the garden which has wrought iron railings along both sides of its perimeter should be risk assessed on health and safety grounds. The railings appear to be low and overlook a concrete area below. There is a possible risk of a resident falling over the balustrade and a requirement is made in this report to assess it, the manager was made aware of this concern at the time of this inspection. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: What we found: The reason for this inspection was to establish what progress had been made towards meeting the statutory requirements made in our report on 21 September 2009. The requirements will be dealt with sequentially from that report: 1. Assessment - A slight amendment to the assessment of need form would indicate the history of the document and date of placement confirming suitability or otherwise could be kept in current care plan folders to assist with understanding residents longer term needs. The case file of the most recent residents confirmed that full assessment information had been obtained and that sufficient information existed to prepare a care plan. 2. Reviewing Care Plans - Homeleighs manager has ensured that a new developed company care plan format is now in place for all residents. The care plans provide a holistic and more personalised picture of the resident as a person indicating the family relationships and a social perspective together with a comprehensive understanding of the residents needs. This was put in place from March this year. Care plans are reviewed monthly by the team leader and the key worker together and updated daily and monthly. A monthly review is summarised on a monthly events sheet and the company has adopted this for all their homes and training continues to be given on an ongoing basis by a private training provider. 3. Daily Lives and Social Activities - There is a full plan of activities evidenced for the summer indicating that there are a range of activities available both within the home and visits made outside the home e.g. to the coast etc. However, daily activities would benefit from being recorded in a central place e.g. perhaps on a matrix to indicate those people who have been involved and what they have been involved in which would make it easier to audit and plan from a management perspective. This requirement could be seen to be partly met but it is recommended that the management team and the activities coordinator look again at the comments made within the key inspection report 21 September 2009. It was recommended that an activities planning tool be introduced. 4. Environment - A tour of the home was undertaken by the inspector with the manager, Mrs Ilott. Communal areas on the ground floor indicated new carpets and curtains in lounges and the general standard on this floor and the first and second floors has clearly improved. Toilets, bathrooms and bedrooms were clean and bedrooms were personalised. The first floor had been recarpeted. There seemed to be a more proactive approach to renewal and refurbishment. There had been a problem with faulty tiling in some of the bathrooms and this is currently being addressed. There is now a regular six monthly review of environmental needs undertaken by the providers property department to identify areas of replacement and renewal.
