What the care home does well Detailed person centred plans are in place that provide clear information about peoples` needs and the support provided by staff. Good systems are in place to ensure that plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The home has in place good systems for auditing the administration of medicines on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to protect the people living in the home. Staff receive training in administering medicines. Good social opportunities are provided for the people living in the home that take account of their interests and preferences. Individual records show that peoples` social and emotional needs are identified. Records are kept of the provision of outings and activities. The complaints procedure has been updated since the last inspection. Good systems are in place for dealing with complaints. Staff have received safeguarding training and are aware of how to deal with an allegation. This protects people living in the home. The home is comfortable, well decorated, homely and clean. The requirements and recommendations made in the last key inspection report have been addressed satisfactorily. Staffing numbers are adequate to meet the needs of the people currently living in the home. The skill mix of staff means that people are well cared for by suitably experience and qualified staff. There is a settled staff team in place and this means that people receive consistent care. Good recruitment procedures protect the people living in the home. Staff have sufficient training opportunities and over fifty per cent of care staff have completed national qualifications in care. Staff are well supervised and have regular staff meetings to make sure that they work in a consistent and effective way. Good management systems are in place for monitoring the quality of the service. People living in the home and their relatives have opportunities to put forward their views about the service. There have been improvements in the standard of record keeping since the last inspection. What the care home could do better: No issues were identified at this inspection. It is located in a residential area of Wallsend close to local shops and good public transport links. Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 9 2 6 0 8 2 0 0 9 Brief description of the care home The home is owned and managed by Four Seasons Healthcare Limited, a large national care provider. Care in the home is provided by Registered Mental Nurses (RMNs) supported by care staff. Forty-six single bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities, are located at ground and first floor levels. On each floor there are separate lounge areas, a dining room, bathrooms and toilets. The home shares kitchen and laundry facilities with an adjacent home. There is a nice, enclosed garden and patio area at the rear of the home. Depending on the type of care provided fees are between £438.63 - £611.36. The home has a statement of purpose and service user guide that give people information to help them decide whether their needs can be met. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: This random inspection was carried out on 15 June 2010. At this inspection it was found that the requirements and recommendations made at the last key inspection have all been satisfactorily addressed. Individual plans are in place for each person and these provide clear information about peoples needs and how these are met by staff. Plans are updated regularly and also when peoples needs change. There was evidence of good person centred care being delivered. Assessment tools are used to ensure that changes are identified. Peoples emotional and social needs are identified within plans. Risk assessments provide good information about how risks are managed. Care plans seen were up to date and there was evidence of good recording. Records relating to administration of medicines are well maintained. Staff receive appropriate training before administering medicines. There are regular audits of the system and the arrangements for the storage of medicines are satisfactory. People said that they receive good care and staff meet their individual needs. Staff were respectful towards people living in the home during the inspection and there was a relaxed atmosphere. Policies and procedures are in place for dealing with complaints. Records of complaints provide information about how complaints are handled and what the outcome is. Staff have received safeguarding training and can describe the action to be taken in the event of an allegation being made. People living in the home said that they felt able to talk to staff if they had any concerns. The home is comfortably furnished and was clean and odour free during the inspection. There was evidence that repairs and maintenance issues are addressed quickly by the handyman. The garden is well maintained and provides attractive outdoor seating areas for people living in the home. Rooms are personalised and reflect peoples interests and taste. Since the last inspection the sluice has been redecorated and foot operated pedal bins are in toilets and bathrooms. New flooring has been fitted in the treatment room and additional storage space means staff have more space to store items. New window restrictors have been fitted and are in good working order. Health and safety checks are carried out at appropriate intervals. Bathrooms were accessible and no equipment was stored in them. There were sufficient staff on duty during this inspection. Staffing consisted of the manager, two nurses and six care staff, one of whom is a senior carer. The rota showed that this level of staffing is maintained. At night there is one nurse and three care staff. The manager said that there is a settled staff team who are experienced and over fifty per cent of staff have completed national qualifications in care. Staff records showed that good recruitment procedures are followed to safeguard people living in the home. Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 A staff training plan is in place and training in safe working practices training is provided at appropriate intervals. Staff said that they get plenty of training opportunities. They also said that there were regular staff meetings and they receive regular supervision. A quality monitoring system is in place and is working well. Health and safety systems are in place and records are kept to demonstrate this. Records were well maintained and up to date.
