Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the home. The AQAA is a self-assessment tool that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people living in the home. It also gave us some statistical information about the home. Surveys returned to us by people living in the home and from other key people with an interest. This enabled them to inform the annual service review process. Information we have about how the home has managed any complaints. What the home has told us about things that have happened, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the home in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the home. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. They told us about how they had met Equality and Diversity, which included: Working as an organisation to ensure that everyone employed is committed to non discriminatory practise. Providing all staff with training in equality and diversity as part of their induction, to ensure that they understand and work to the organisations principles right from the start. Monitoring equality through three monthly audit sheets, which highlight any areas of concern that require addressing. The manager is aware of how the home is to progress over the next 12 months which is reflected in the AQAA. This includes: Undertaking work to enhance the garden for people by providing more sensory plants, a water feature and accessories such as chimes. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 Exploring the possibility of spending time with people in settings other than their home environment with a view to learning more about them and thus enhance their home lives. The continued development of leisure activities, especially when at home and restricted by weather conditions. Ensuring that staff are trained and competent at writing key pertinent information in daily reports and care plans. Ensuring that all staff, both current and new are up to date with the most recent training for safeguarding vulnerable adults. Putting processes in place to monitor staff performance on a more regular basis, and to use this to encourage staff to have confidence in their abilities and decision making abilities. Examples of areas highlighted by the manager as having improved in the last 12 months include: The home has been redecorated throughout, with people playing a key part in choosing colours. Lighting has been improved in areas within the building. A more varied and healthy diet has been positively introduced to people. Ceiling hoists have been fitted where it was identified that people would benefit from these. The introduction of practice notes highlighting peoples preferences and assessed needs to ensure that they are cared for and supported appropriately. Work has been undertaken to improve and strengthen already positive relationships with family members and other key individuals. Regular staff supervision has been reintroduced, which provides support for people to ensure that they undertake their role effectively. The implementation of a pictorial fire evacuation procedure which people have commented is user friendly and easy to follow. We received four completed surveys. One was from a person who lives in the home, the other three were from staff. All of the surveys indicate that the home is well run and provides positive outcomes for people, however there is a theme running through them about low staffing numbers and how more staff would be beneficial to both the people living in the home and the existing staff team. Comments in the surveys include The home meets most of my needs and interacts well with my family; It would be beneficial if staff turnover was not so frequent, at present the staff are excellent in their care; The home is very nice and clean, very Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 homely and provides very good 24 hour care, maybe more staff on shift sometimes so we can take service users out more; Its clean, spacious and suits the needs of the current service users... communication is good between staff and other professionals; I feel that as staff numbers are low a lot of pressure is put on the staff we have... at times when you have to work alone it is not good especially at weekends when both service users are at home and they could be taken out more; service users needs are met very well...their families are welcomed and included in many things going on; as a support worker I enjoy working in this home. The AQAA states that no complaints have been received by the home in the last 12 months. We have received one complaint since the last key inspection in March 2009 which was regarding staffing levels in the home. This was referred to the provider for investigation. We are awaiting the outcome. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened concerning the people who live there since our last key inspection. This shows us that they have managed the issues well. They generally work well with us and have shown us that their home continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a Key inspection by 31 March 2011. However we can inspect the home at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people living there.
