What the care home does well All of the residents we spoke with, told us that the home was a nice place to live in. They told us that the staff, many of whom have been there for some time, were very kind and helpful and they enjoyed the food that was served. One lady told us that " it `s like a home from home" and another said "I have a lovely room and everything is done for me I feel like a special guest". Some people that we spoke with did tell us that they would like more activities to be organised for them and the manager told us that they are trying to recruit an additional person to enable this to be done. What the care home could do better: Our judgement is that this home is still providing a good service for the people who live there and areas for improvement have been identified and are being addressed. Therefore, we did not issue any requirements or recommendations and will not be changing our inspection plans. We can continue to inspect the home at any time should we receive information which causes us any concern. The home is about a tenminutes walk from the main Godstone Road and Kenley railway station. It stands in tree-lined grounds, which residents enjoy in the warm weather. Parking is provided on site, to the side of the main entrance. The accommodation includes thirty-three single bedrooms with the majority having en-suite facilities. A passenger lift is provided to all floors used by residents. A substantial property in its own right, the house has been co-joined with a multi-level annexe next door, this providing the Ben & Cicely Wing which has its own lounge area. Other public rooms are varied, and provide for both private and communal comfort. The main lounge and dining area is extended by a sun lounge. A conservatory extends this space out into the pleasant garden area at the front and this overlooks a fountain feature, which residents say is most welcome in hot weather. At the time of the last visit the home was charging residents £404 - £650 per week however, there may have been an increase since that time. Additional charges would be payable for items such as newspapers, hairdressing and chiropody; these would be discussed prior to admission. The inspection report can also be downloaded from the Care Quality Commission website. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We had received some information about the home which had raised concerns about cleanliness and how residents were being cared for. We were told that one of the residents had looked unkempt and that toilet facilities were dirty and inadequate. We were also told that on occasion food was cold and that a residents dignity had been compromised at the time of their death. We had previously inspected the home in December 2009. At that time we had judged that it was providing good quality outcomes for the people who live there and that their needs were being met in a way which suited them. We have not received any other information since that time which would cause us to change our inspection programme. We are aware that there is currently one issue being investigated according to the local authority safeguarding procedures, no other complaints have been received. On the day that we visited the home there were twenty nine people living there, many of whom have dementia. The majority of them were in the lounge having just had their lunch. Others were wandering around the home, which they are able to do quite freely. They all looked clean and well cared for. We were able to sit in the lounge and chat with residents and we also spoke with some relatives who were visiting. At tea time some ladies from a local organisation, Music for Health, arrived and when we left the home residents were singing and dancing and enjoying the hokey - cokey. While we were there we walked around the home and particularly looked at some of the toilet facilities. We noted that there were not any paper towels available and were told that new dispensers have been ordered. The toilets, and the rest of the home were all very clean and tidy although we were told that there are sometimes problems when some residents have been in there on their own. There are some areas of the home which would benefit from some redecoration and refurbishment and we have been told that this is now planned.
