What the care home does well Everyone in this home is treated as an individual. The staff try to understand what each person needs and wants and to help them to live their lives the way that they choose. One person wrote on a survey: `I like the staff taking me out every day.` This is a lovely, new, purpose built home. It is well furnished and decorated. It is clean, spacious and comfortable. There are rooms for people to do things together in groups and peaceful, more private spaces for individuals to be by themselves or with visitors. Everyone who lives there has their own room and bathroom. There is a sheltered, private garden outside. The home has been designed so that people who use wheelchairs can move about freely and there is a lift between the floors. A social worker wrote: ` I was extremely impressed by the homely atmosphere, which provides a therapeutic environment.` Staff in this home receive lots of training and support, so that they know how to care for people safely. A staff member wrote: `The training is good, the management are approachable and we have a good network of support.` One person who lives in the home told the inspector: `They do a good job.` Staff work with health and social care professionals to help keep people out of hospital, to keep them healthy and to encourage them to become more independent. One staff member wrote: `Integrated Support does a very good job in helping people with the move back into the community.`The home asks people for their views on the service and what would make the service better. It uses their suggestions to plan improvements. What the care home could do better: The home must continue to develop its training programme based on the needs and situation of the people who use the service. In particular, the home must provide staff with more training on mental health law and what it means for the way they work with people. The home should continue to develop information for people who use its services that people who do not read written English can understand. All sorts of different people, men and women of different ages, with different abilities and needs and from different backgrounds, communities and cultures use services. Some people who need to use services are lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgender. So it is good if the home can employ different sorts of people to support them. The home`s managers should ensure that it lets people know that it welcomes people from all communities and backgrounds and recognises and respects the differences between people, including their lifestyle choices and beliefs. They should regularly check that there is nothing in the information they provide and the way they recruit and support staff that could unintentionally put off people, who would be good carers, from applying for a job in this home. We found that the home has made many improvements since the last inspection and has done what the last inspection report said it must. The home was assessed as achieving good outcomes for people who use the service in the outcome areas that were inspected. The inspector talked to the homes service manager, her deputy, the human resources manager and the person who is registered with the Care Quality Commission as the individual with overall legal responsibility for the service. The inspector also met three people who live in the home and two other staff. She checked files and other paperwork. Before the visit, the inspector sent surveys to people who live in the home and one person returned one. Surveys were also sent to staff and four returned them. They gave their views about the service. Before the inspection the acting manager completed an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment, which gave us information about the home and how it meets the National Minimum Standards and Requirements of the Care Standards Act 2000. The random inspection looked at specific outcome areas identified by checking all this information collected before the inspection and the previous inspection report.
