What the care home does well Everyone we spoke to said that the staff were kind and respectful to them. Their comments included `I like the staff`, `the staff are very good`, `they treat you nicely` and `the staff are very nice`. All nine people who completed surveys said that they `always` receive the care and support that they need. Comments in surveys included `the staff are always very friendly` and `I get looked after very well`. We looked at satisfaction questionnaires recently returned by relatives or friends of people who live there. Comments included `we are very pleased with the overall care provided` and `one of the best for entertainment`. The activities co-ordinator is clearly doing some good work and the programme on offer includes bingo, reminiscence, making cards, one to ones and quizzes. Individual profiles are being created for each person that capture their life story and memories. Better daily records are to be kept of what people have been doing and these will help to direct the service to be even more person centred. New bathrooms have been fitted on all floors of the home. These provide much more pleasant spaces for people to have showers or baths. The home was clean and hygienic when we visited. What the care home could do better: One person who lives there said `it`s too noisy in here`. Another individual said `the evenings are the worst part - there`s nothing going on` and this was a view shared by two other people living there. `I`d like to go out more - it sometimes feels like a prison in here` was another comment we received. Further consideration should be given as to how the main communal lounge is arranged. Our observation was that there was sometimes too much going on with televisions ondifferent channels and music being played at the same time. It was sometimes confusing looking at one television that had the sound turned down whilst hearing the sound from another set tuned to a different channel. Our observation was also that there were only a small number of people watching the television at any one time. The manager is working on updating the care plans. We discussed how these documents could be made even more individualised and person centred. We have recommended that the staff work at making sure that each plan is as specific as possible and avoid repetitive generic statements. A strong emphasis should be put on making each care plan a live document with staff using daily notes to record what is working and what is not. Regular reviews need to make sure that each plan is up to date and effective. The home`s AQAA told us that future plans included encouraging `the service user to be involved in more activities` and `installing a large greenhouse with wheelchair access for service users who have an interest in gardening`. The positive work being carried out by the activity co-ordinator needs to continue and be built upon. We recommend that there is continued emphasis on quality of life, engagement and occupation. Re-arranging the main lounge could also provide more space for people to do things and for more interactive items to be provided. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We made an unannounced visit to the home on the 25th February 2010. We spoke to twelve people who live there, two visiting relatives, one staff member and the manager. We also received nine completed surveys from people who live at the home and eight staff members. The manager had also supplied us with a self assessment document called an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This was well completed and gave us good information about the service being provided. General comments from the people who live there included I like it here, they do some good, its very good, its alright and very nice. We looked at the system for supporting people to take their medication and saw that people were receiving the right medication at the right time on the day of our visit. Records we looked at were well kept and we checked some quantities of medication to make sure that these were correct.
