What the care home does well The staff had access to good master copies of wound care assessments and wound record charts that the company had developed to help show accurate records of how wounds were responding to treatments. Staff also produced policies and guidance on the most updated wound care practices including relevant (nice) clinical guidelines. Some staff have been supported by the company to obtain external funding to attend wound care updates at the local college. What the care home could do better: The manager agreed that all three care plans needed to be reviewed so that staff were consistently and accurately using the company wound care records to help show what care was given to help the residents wounds to heal. The manager was confident that this would be done by the following day. She also agreed that she would review the competencies and training needs of staff so that they were fully trained and updated in wound care. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: We visited the home unannounced following a complaint referred to Sefton Social Services regarding the management of wound care. We looked at 3 care plans that showed how the staff manage the residents wounds. Some records were more detailed than others and gave enough information to show what care was given to heal their wounds. However one record had not been updated and had no recent record from staff to show whether the persons wound was healing. Training records could not be located during this visit however staff were able to verbally advise of some staff having training in wound care and others hadnt had any updates.
