What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the registered person on 07/10/09. The AQAA is a self-assessment tool, which focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some statistical information about the service. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Surveys were sent to the home to distribute to people who use the service, staff and professionals. We received one survey from a family member and one survey from a member of staff. The previous key inspection report. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What has this told us about the service? The registered person completed and returned the AQAA within the required timescales and it provided some good information about the outcomes for the people using the service. To ensure the views of people who use the service are promoted and incorporated into what the service do, they told us that they send out questionnaires and collate the information. If a deficit in the standards is found they told us they will then act upon that area. The AQAA recorded that there are regular resident meetings, and relatives are also able to take part in these. The service acts upon their peoples requests and their point of view is valued. Feedback is given to people who use the service and relatives on issues raised and people are kept informed of all progress. As a result of listening to people who use the service they told us they have created small seating areas in many places around the home; this allows people who use the service and relatives to sit where they choose and not to sit only in the lounge areas. They have replaced hand rails all around the home, a new style of rails fitted in toilets for extra security to support being to move independently around the home. The service has raised money and had a summer house built to allow people who use the service and relatives to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air and be protected from the weather. For activities the AQAA recorded that more poetry sessions have been arranged and staff have organised a domino competition with a trophy going to the winning team. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 There are quiz nights, where people who use the service, staff family and friends all get together in their teams and compete against each other. They reported that there has been an increase in external entertainers coming into the home; this now happens twice a month. The service reported in the AQAA that they have strengthened their links with the local community, and had a stall at the local village annual show, which they told us was a success and it has raised their profile within the community. The service has purchased a very large flat screen television, as comments were taken on board that previously it could not be seen from all areas in the lounge. The AQQA recorded that they offer a wide variety of staff training and updates. This means that people are able to benefit from a well trained staff team who regular update their skills and knowledge. People who use the service are encouraged to make choices and staff respect peoples privacy and dignity. Individuals can express their views both good and bad, then staff act upon these to provide a satisfactory outcome. The completed survey recorded that staff are approachable and will answer any question. The service recorded in the AQAA that they deliver a high quality of dementia care and maintain links with dementia services within the organisation and with the Alzheimers association. This means the service keeps up to date with modern practices and improved ways of working with people with dementia. We looked at the information in the AQAA and in the surveys, and our judgement is that the home is still providing an excellent service and they know what further improvements they have to make. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, however we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
