Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: 1. The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. 2. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. 3. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. 4. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. 5. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. 6. Relevant information from other organisations. 7. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? Our last key inspection on 26th February 2008 indicated that the home were ensuring excellent outcomes for people. Since then we have carried out one annual service review (ASR) on 20th December 2008, which did not change our opinion of the service. The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear, very detailed and gave us all the information we asked for. Our judgement is that the home is still providing an excellent service. We sent surveys to residents and other people who have involvement with the home. We received a good response. Six residents, six staff, two relatives and two visiting professionals replied. All the comments we received were positive. These will be referred to in the review. The AQAA told us that the provision of service at Lawrence House has been under review, and a proposal to create a new integrated dementia service is being proposed with another service in Shepway. Lawrence House makes sure that people receive the care and the support that they Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 need. The registered manager makes sure that people are treated as individuals. The care plans are developed in a way that suits the person best. They take into account that because of their conditions some people have difficulty communicating. The staff make sure that they find out what people prefer and how they like things to be done. An example of this was the home consider the type and quantity of bedding and whether they like to have a light on overnight. The AQAA told us that all service users are encouraged to maintain their life skills and manage as much of their own personal care as they are able with the support and encouragement of the staff. They said they make sure that all medical conditions are closely monitored and immediate action is taken when there are any concerns. There is involvement with doctors, district nurses and other professionals who visit the home regularly. The following comments were made in the surveys we received from residents, They look after you. The staff are good. The food is lovely and it is clean and comfortable. I am happy with everything. I wish the home could stay open. I am very well looked after. The staff make me feel safe and secure. Key workers have, with the help of service users, relatives and friends, put together individual life history books. These include copies of photographs given by families and information and stories about past events that the service users have enjoyed. The following comments were made in the surveys we received from relatives, My relative receives great care in a homely environment. This is the sort of care that all people should receive. The closing of the home would be the wrong thing to do. Instead of providing a new building, the money should be used to make Lawrence House better. The staff treat all the residents as individuals in a warm and caring manner. My mother has received excellent care. The staff receive the training they need to make sure they do their jobs effectively and safely and in the interest of the people who are staying at the home. The AQAA told us that 94 per cent of the staff have NVQ 2 or better. All Staff are trained in Equality, Diversity, Mental Capacity Awareness and Adult Protection. There is a rolling programme of training in place. The home does make sure that all safety checks are done before staff come to work at the home. The following comments were made in the surveys we received from staff, Lawrence House staff are trained to a good standard. Staff are well motivated. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 I enjoy coming to work. There is a happy atmosphere. We work as a team and everyone is motivated. The people we care for are treated as individuals and we offer them as many choices as possible. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection, such as incidents and accidents and they have shown that they have managed issues well. We feel that they work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide excellent outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 25th February 2011 However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
