What the care home does well All the residents who replied to our survey told us that they were well cared for, and always received the care and support they needed. Comments included: "Good care, good company, nice living area." "I am comfortable and very happy here." "They give me full attention - faultless." All the residents told us that the home always arranged activities for them to take part in. There were notices in the home about future activities, and photos of those who came to the home to lead some of the activities, such as music and dance, and pat dogs. Local schools also entertained residents. The AQAA told us that visitors of all ages were welcome at any time. There were some facilities to amuse children. The manager also told us that visitors were welcome to stay for meals. The manager told us that the home had a good relationship with local NHS professionals who were ready to support the home with advice and visits. The training of staff had improved with the development by the provider of e-learning programmes which staff could work through at home or at work. What the care home could do better: No requirements have been made as a result of this inspection. The manager told us that they wanted to improve the recording of residents` socialactivities. Staff were active in taking residents out to the garden, or supporting them in walking, or sitting and talking to them, and these activities should be recorded to give a fuller picture of the person. The manager hoped to improve the large garden at Lavender Cottage by making it fully wheelchair accessible, and re-designing it for the benefit of residents of both properties. Upper floors of the building are accessed by a stairway and shaft lift. A single storey building on the opposite side of the road, called Lavender Cottage is a residential unit for older people with dementia care needs. An additional day care service for four older people with special needs is also available on this site. Both properties are situated on a busy main road in Oulton Broad, however the buildings are set well back from the roadway and the front door to Lavender Cottage remains locked, although access to outside areas can be gained via the back door. Lavender Cottage has a large enclosed rear garden with secure boundaries. Shops and local facilities are a short distance away. At the time of the last inspection the homes fees ranged from £341 to £550. Hairdressing, chiropody, and personal toiletries are not included in this fee. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We visited Lilac Lodge and Lavender Cottage to do a random inspection. The home is rated as providing good outcomes for its residents. We sent out survey questionnaires to residents beforehand and received nine back. In addition, the manager was required to complete an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) which asks the manager what the home does well, what improvements have taken place in the last twelve months, and what the home is planning to do to improve the service. From the information in the AQAA, we identified falls prevention as a key area which the home had worked on to improve the care and safety of residents at risk. We saw the monthly accident analysis required by the provider, which listed those residents suffering falls. The residents with the most falls changed each month as the home took action to prevent such incidents. The manager and the deputy had recently attended a falls prevention course run by the NHS. Indeed one of the advisers was due to visit the home shortly to assess a resident which the home had referred. We followed the care plan of a resident who had been subject to a number of falls and noted the risk assessments and regular reviews in there. The format of the care plans was devised by the provider. It took staff through a logical path from pre-admission assessment, to care planning, to risk assessments and reviews.
