Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: We visited the home on the 15th July 2010 to assess what progress the home had made in meeting the Statutory Requirement Notice served on the 23rd June 2010. The home was required to comply with the notice by the 30th June 2010. The home was required to 1. Make arrangements for the safe and accurate recording handling safekeeping safe administration and disposal of medicines received into the care home. 2. Ensure that medication prescribed for people using the service is available in the home at all times so that it can be administered to them as prescribed. In order to assess whether the home had complied with the Statutory Requirements Notice a number of medication and care records were examined. We found on the whole that the receipt administration and disposal of medicines were being recorded so that it could be seen that people who were using the service were receiving their medication as prescribed. We found that the home was auditing all of the medicines on a daily basis to ensure that they were being administered as prescribed by the doctor. We found that the home was only out of stock of one medicine and the responsibility for this occurrence rested with the supplying pharmacy and was not due to any failings within the homes systems. We therefore found that the management of medicines had improved and the Statutory Requirements Notice had been complied with. We also found that the home had assessed the competency of the staff who were administering medicines and had concluded that all of these staff were competent to administer medicines safely and accurately. The home had plans in place to check the competency of each member of staff on a six monthly basis.
