Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. The AQAA was received, fully completed on 13th October 2009. This contained comprehensive information in all of the sections, detailing how the service addresses the standards and how this is evidenced. Other information we have about this service includes notifications under Regulation 37 which advise the CQC of untoward events in the service. These notifications are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection was conducted 12 December 2008, where the college was given a two star rating, a good service. Additional information received about the service was also included. Comment cards were sent out; ten were received completed all from students at the college. They had been assisted in completing the forms either by staff or relatives. The CQC has been advised of sixteen incidents regarding this service. Seven of these have been medication related issues and the remainder student related . Many of these have been student on student incidents. Many of those have also been practice issues and not strictly Adult protection referrals. None of those incidents were investigated through Adult Protection procedures, all were investigated internally and some learning outcomes were identified The college has a directive which means that all incidents regardless of how trivial are reported as safe guarding referrals. What has this told us about the service? The service provides an environment where students are supported to be as independent as possible whilst in an educational setting. The management team are open and transparent and actively promote collaborative working.. The student comment cards overall made favorable comments saying things like they were assisted to be as independent as possible, they enjoyed their lessons and one added the lounge is a nice place to sit and relax in the evening. Two areas where students wanted improvements were more activities and outings at the weekend and one wanted a TV of their own. The AQAA told us that improvements had been made in the following areas: The college continues to make steady improvement in all areas. There has been significant development in the nursing team. Nurses have benefited from increased investment from the organisation, through additional training which includes extended nursing roles. The Clinical Lead Nurse has been supportive of the team and has given clear guidance and support, which has in turn improved the service for the students. Development of close links with Bromley PCT, has meant students have access to a Neurologist and Epilepsy Nurse Specialist and Continence Nurse. There is also a service level agreement with the Dietetics service. The care team have developed through additional training to further enhance their Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 skills. The college has committed to regular support and supervision meetings for all staff, which informs the Annual Performance Review process. Areas for improvements feed into the workforce development plan and staff training programme. The retention of care staff has improved; this is due to the robust induction process, commitment to training and career opportunities. There is careful transition planning and support for students from school to college. Transition is discussed at each annual review meeting to inform planning and preparation in readiness for life after college. Students are at the centre of all the work undertaken at Nash, they are supported by a cohesive care and education team. This ensures the 24 hour curriculum is maintained and further improves learning outcomes for the individual. The College has excellent Therapy departments, which supports students to reach their potential, these include: Speech and Language, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Counsellor, Music and Art Therapist, Aromatherapist, Psychologist and Psychologist assistants. With such a vast Therapy team and close links to the PCT,all aspects of the students needs are met. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The service will be inspected within 24 months of this Annual Service Review.
