Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The last key inspection at the home was carried out on October 31st 2007 when the home was given a rating of 2 star/Good. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: - The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. -Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. - Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection and Annual Service Review. - Relevant information from other organisations. - What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The AQAA stated: Through our established mechanisms of feed back from residents and advocates we have recently introduced the following changes: 1) Increased the number of hours dedicated to social activities. 2) Increased over all trained staffing hours. 3) Invested £750.000 in the construction of new conservatories and the built environment. 4) Established specialist Dementia Care Unit, with Sensory Gardens. 5) Introduced animal / pet farm. The surveys returned to us were very positive about the improvements that have been made at the home. Comments included: Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 The rooms have all been modernised and the gardens expanded with fountains, waterfalls, new benches and tables with umbrellas. In addition residents have the small animal farm. A brand new unit now houses some of the residents(most of them have severe problems) and I must particularly commend the staff who have set it up and made it not only successful but a sensitive, cosy family environment. They have lovely gardens and many of the residents love to be outside and enjoy the wonderful flowers and plants and watch the many animals and birds. The upgrading has made an amazing difference all rooms are bright and homely the dementia unit is adapted to care for this specific needs group. The garden and animals are wonderful and give so much pleasure to residents and visitors. Twenty seven completed Have Your Say Surveys were returned to us, eight from the people living in the home, ten from relatives and nine from staff. The comments received about the service offered at the home were extremely good. They included: The staff are caring and friendly. I enjoy the activities especially musical bingo. I am happy and they look after me. The staff are so polite and accommodating, friendly and jolly. I am very pleased with everything. The care and individual attention is excellent. Our family has been delighted by the care, affection and homeliness. Good standards of catering maintained. Good activities to stimulate my X. The staff have been caring and helpful and X has improved a lot and now feeds herself. My X has been here 3 months and I am more than pleased with the standards. Only two of the completed surveys made comments on what the service could do better. These comments were: Provide a few more recreational facilities and activities in the afternoons. Organise outings, only one organised in the last 4 months and that had to be cancelled due to the weather. Better accounting standards and a monthly receipt mechanism. Improved system to track where false teeth and glasses have been placed. The manager of the home should take these comments into consideration for future Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 planning in the home. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 30th October 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
