Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all of the information we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment, which is required by law to be completed by the service and focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about any other things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the result of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last twelve months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was very comprehensive and provided good information including all that we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the service is still providing an excellent service and they know what further improvements they need to make. We received completed surveys from five people living at the care home. When asked what does the home do well? one person told us keep it nice and clean and activities are good and a second person told us makes me feel homely and a third person said I enjoy the activities..I am very happy here. Another resident told us I am very happy here. When asked do you receive the care and support you need? three people said always one said usually and one said sometimes. The AQAA informed us that since the previous inspection a new risk assessment to monitor pain experienced by residents who are unable to express this verbally has been developed. The activity coordinator hours have increased and the activity programme developed. This has enabled residents to be taken to the beach hut each Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Wednesday during the summer. A laundry assistant has been employed to work five days per week. A computer has been installed for residents to use at their leisure. 68 of staff have achieved NVQ level 2; the deputy manager and senior carer have achieved NVQ level 4 in social care and both have undertaken the junior management programme. Lottery funding has been obtained and used to provide weekly seated exercise for residents. Ancillary staff have undertake training in safeguarding adults. The office has been redecorated and carpeted and the kitchen refurbished. Ten bedrooms have been redecorated. New bedding, towels, flannels have been purchased and new carpeting provided to some rooms. The hallways in two bays of the home have been redecorated and provided with new carpeting. Further developments have been identified to continue to maintain the decor to the highest standard and to refurbish one bay with new towels and sheets and curtains and new bedding, lampshades and bed spread covers for nine rooms. There are plans to continue to develop care planning and ensure reviews are undertaken and to progress the development of end of life care. All care staff are to undertake NVQ level 2 in care and a person centred approach to care will continue to be reinforced during staff development. The AQAA informed us that the home has a complaints procedure a copy of which is held on each notice board in the home. The home has a compliments and complaints log so that residents and their relatives can express their view about the service. When asked Is there someone you can speak to informally if you are not happy? All five people said yes and all five confirmed they knew how to make a formal complaint. The AQAA informed us that the home has safeguarding procedures in place to protect residents from abuse and all staff receive training in safeguarding adults irrespective of the position they hold. Since the previous key inspection the manager, deputy manager and all senior staff have attended training on the Mental Capacity Act and all staff have been given information in staff meetings. The manager and a senior carer have also attended Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards training. The manager has also attended updated safeguard training on the new SET (Southend, Essex, Thurrock) guidelines. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since the last key inspection and they have shown they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that the service continues to provide excellent outcomes for people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 14th January 2012. However we can inspect the service at anytime if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using it.
