What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the information that we have received since the last key inspection visit. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service within the requested time. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for the people using the service. The AQAA is a legal requirement; it also gives us some numerical information about the service. The previous inspection report of 26 March 2009. What the service has told us about the things that have occurred in the service these are notifications and are a legal requirement. What other people have told us through their surveys. We received six surveys from people living at Newstead Lodge, five from their relatives and four from staff. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment within the required timescales; the home manager completed this. The information in the AQAA was clear and provided us with all of the information we asked for. We were told how the home ensures that people who use the service are consulted on things that matter to them. For example, they told us that as a result of listening to people they ensure they contact relatives after a GP has visited an individual to update them on the persons health, with their permission. They also hold more one to one meetings with people who have said they prefer this rather than the larger two monthly residents meetings. They told us how they had met Equality and Diversity. - Staff training during induction covers promotion of race, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion and belief. - They focus more on past history which is documented to enable them to see what a particular resident likes and their usual way of life. - Care plans are written with the help of the service users and family to reflect individual needs on equality and diversity. Individual service users race, gender identity, disability, age, religion and belief are promoted based on information provided during care planning. - They provide a range of equipment such as electric hoist, standing aid, lifting aid, pressure seat pumps according to the different needs of the residents. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 - They have reduced the number of double bedrooms within the home to enhance care for physically disabled residents. - A church vicar visits weekly to give Holy Communion. The local churches also provide a service once a month for Christian residents. - They support the residents in celebrating their festive periods like Easter, and Christmas or as appropriate, or requested. They encourage birthday celebrations with the help of relatives. The AQAA tells they have received eight complaints, or grumbles, in the last twelve months. These were investigated appropriately under the homes complaints procedures. People told us in the surveys that they know who to speak to if they have any concerns. No complaints have been made to us about the service. The service tells us that they follow their recruitment procedures in seeking references and completing safety checks to make sure that suitable staff are employed. Staff also confirmed this process in their surveys. We were told that five of the eight permanent care staff have achieved a minimum of level two in the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in care. This means that staff should have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide a good standard of support to the people who live there. We received six completed surveys from people who live at the home. They told us that they are satisfied with the quality of care, staff, and services offered and that they are happy living there. These responses were consistent with the previous inspection report and judgements made at that time. Comments included: They always look after me well. I would always recommend Newstead Lodge as a care home of excellence. The staff are friendly and kind and the atmosphere is a happy one with plenty of time for laughter. They care. We received five completed surveys from relatives of people who live at Newstead Lodge. They told us they are satisfied with the care provided at the home. Additional comments made included: They do everything very well. Sometimes the music is too loud for conversation. They also leave the television on a channel of not any particular interest to the residents. Although there is a turnover of staff, they are always friendly and very helpful. I feel that my relative is safe and well looked after. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 My family are always made welcome when we visit. We received four completed surveys from staff who work at the home. They told us they are given up to date information about the needs of people and feel there are enough staff available to meet those needs. Comments included; They should have staff to do cleaning and laundry which would mean carers can concentrate on the level of care given. We take care of the residents very well and we try to encourage their independence as much as possible. The service continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection, reporting to us any issues that may affect people that live there. They work well with us, and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We have looked at all the information available to us and in our judgement the service continues to provide a good service. We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 26 March 2012. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
