Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found:
This inspection was carried out by a pharmacist inspector who only looked at the way in which medicines are handled, recorded and stored. Requirements not related to medicines that were made at the previous inspection in April 2008 will be listed as outstanding requirements if compliance has not been evidenced. We watched part of the lunchtime medicine round and saw that medicines were administered in a friendly and safe manner. We found that the administration of medicines was recorded accurately. We saw that one person was prescribed a medicine when required: The reason for this prescription and instructions on when the medicine should be given were recorded in the persons care plan but the information was not easy to find. Medicines prescribed when required for pain were also written on a separate chart so that their use could be recorded more clearly. We noticed that some people were not getting their nightime medicine on some days as they were asleep. An up to date reference book on medicines was available for staff to read. We found that medicines were securely stored in air-conditioned rooms. Medicines stored in medicine fridges were being kept at the correct temperature. The cabinet used for storing controlled drugs met legal requirements. We checked the quantities of some controlled drugs and found that stocks corresponded with the homes records. We saw that staff also carry out regular stock checks of controlled drugs. We checked the quantities of a few medicines that were not controlled drugs: We found that the amounts corresponded with the records on the medicine charts. We saw that the receipt of medicines into the home is recorded.
