Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was completed by the registered manager of the Old Farmhouse and sent to us prior to this Annual Service Review (ASR). The AQAA is a self-assessment tool that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection that was carried out by CSCI on 16th June 2008. We did not receive any comments about this service from people who live at the Old Farmhouse, from the staff team or from health or social care professionals. What has this told us about the service? The homes self assessment, completed by the registered manager, was very comprehensive and reflected upon areas where the home is performing well as well as giving details of where improvements have been made. The AQAA also identified what plans the home has for the future. The AQAA reflected positively on the manager of the service who was registered with us on 27th April 2009 when he demonstrated a thorough understanding of his role and in-depth knowledge of the service provided as well as a good understanding of legislation that guides practice within residential care services. We found that Mr Child has the skills and experience to manage this service safely and effectively. When we asked what the Old Farmhouse does well the manager stated in the AQAA that The Old Farmhouse staff team have positive and value based consistency with positive interactions, communication and planning for and with the service users to allow best practice throughout the teams and the home. The service users are now involved in a broader range of activities due to a high level of staff adaptability and commitment rather than repetitive planning and a lack of fresh initiative and stimulation. The Old Farmhouse has been renovated and is now utilising the space and rooms within as well as utilising the alterations and renovation to the gardens. All service users rooms are individualised to their taste and there are constant updates to facilities and materials. His comments suggest that people living at the Old Farmhouse are enjoying a good quality of life with effective support in an environment that meets their needs. When we asked the manager what he felt had improved over the last twelve months he reflected positively on his own appointment suggesting that there is now a positive atmosphere and a more cohesive team He also stated that, The environment inside and out has improved greatly as has the level of interaction with outside agencies. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 There has been a positive development of professional relationships with family members and a higher level of external professional involvement in planned care. Long standing issues of recording, planning and staff member interaction with each other and the service users, have been recognised and dealt with, via supervision and discussion with senior line management to allow steady positive progression. When asked what the home could do better the manager stated that staff development, training and support were still central to improving the service provided and he would also like to see a greater level of service user involvement in the running and planning of the home The AQAA states that there have been no complaints made to the home within the last twelve months and none have been received by us suggesting that people are happy with the service provided at The Old Farmhouse. At the time of our last visit on 16th June 2008 we judged that People are protected by procedures in place for managing complaints and can be confident that their concerns will be listened to. We also found that People living at the home can be assured that the home operates with their best interests at heart by effectively using their own policies and local safeguarding procedures to investigate incidents that take place within the home. All of this information suggests that the home continues to improve and offer a good quality service providing person centred support and seeking to include the people who live at the home in all decision making processes. Staff are being well supported and are developing in confidence and competence. At the time of our last inspection the then manager of the home said that the home must now rebuild a positive management team and structure. Information received to support this service review suggests that this has now been achieved and the people who live at the Old Farmhouse are having a better quality of life as a result. The home notifies us of incidents that occur within the home and recent information sent to us suggests that the manager is proactive in reviewing peoples liberties and taking action to ensure that the home is offering support to people with their best interests at heart. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 16th June 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
