What the care home does well There has been little change of personnel over the years and the place is run like a family home, ensuring stability and the development of good understanding of residents needs. One staff member wrote in a survey, "Communication and support between us is very good". Another staff member wrote, "The home treats people with respect and dignity". This was confirmed form talking to people who live at the home. We looked at care plans and in particular the support given to people who need help with personal care. The records are detailed with information of health, social and welfare needs of each person who lives at the home in place to ensure they are supported well. One person who lives at the home spoken to said, "They help when I need it". A staff member spoken to said, "We mostly prompt and encourage people to be independent when it comes to personal care". Detailed daily programmes are worked out with all individuals who live at the home to ensure an independent lifestyle as possible. One person who lives at the home told us in a survey "All staff are respectful". What the care home could do better: There were no requirements and recommendations made during this visit. The manager and staff continue to provide good outcomes for people living at the home. Parkhaven is situated near to Stanley Park. It is close to shops, libraries and other local facilities and bus routes are situated close-by. Accommodation within the home is situated on the ground and first floors. There are Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home three single bedrooms and one double bedroom. These are not en-suite. There is a lounge and a dining kitchen. At the rear of the home there is a small back yard. There is a Statement of PurposeService User Guide, which is given to all prospective residents. This written information explains the care service that is offered, who the owners and staff are, and what the resident can expect if he or she decides to live at the home. Information on the visit 19/05/10 showed that the fees for care at the home are from £297.00 to £450.00 per week, with added expenses for hairdressing, chiropody, newspapers, outings and holidays. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: We visited the home on the 19/05/10 to carry out a random inspection, the purpose of the visit was to ensure the standard of care is good and the home continues to provide positive outcomes for people who live at the home, as previous inspections have identified. We spoke to people living at the home briefly, staff and the owners. We also received comments from surveys/questionnaires sent to staff and people living at the home to get their views on how the home is run. Comments were positive and some are included in this report. We looked at the quality of care in areas of, personal and health care support and concerns, complaints and Protection. This is a small home and all the residents have lived here for a number of years. We looked at care records for one person living at the home and found regular reviews taking place and any changes in daily routines or risks, identified and recorded to ensure each person lives an independent lifestyle within a risk framework. At the time of the visit we observed people getting ready for a day out in Cleveleys and staff supporting residents to get ready for the trip out. One person who lives at the home wrote in a survey, A lovely place to live. A member of staff spoken to said, We encourage people to look after personal care independently. Records show people who live at the home have regular contact with specialist health care services to ensure any health needs are met and treatment is monitored. A staff member spoken to said, Because we know each person so well we quickly identify if someone as any health concerns. We went through how medication was administered and checked medication records with the person in charge. We found good systems in place to ensure medicines are given out correctly and at the right time. A staff member said, Only trained staff administer medicines. A new facility for the storage of medication with a separate locked cabinet for controlled drugs is in place, to ensure all medication is stored correctly. The owner spoken to said, We have great support form the local pharmacist. There is a detailed complaints procedure which is made available in the documentation provided to families and people who live here. A staff member said, Information is available for anyone visiting the home. No complaints have been received by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for a number of years. One person who lives at the home spoken to said, No need to complain I love it here. There is only a small staff team, however the manager informed us in the AQAA they have received safeguarding training and speaking to staff confirmed this, ensuring the residents are protected from any form of abuse and are kept safe. One staff member spoken to said, When safeguarding adults training is due we are put on the course, Also one staff member said, We keep on top of updating safeguarding training.
