Preston Towers is a large stone built detached building set in its own grounds set back from one of the main roads leading out of North Shields. It has been converted to provide accomodation for older people. The home is located within walking distance of local amenities. To the front of the building there are extensive lawns and garden areas and ample car parking is provided. The home has retained many original features such as mosaic-tiled floors in the hallway and high ceilings with original covings. Preston Towers is registered to provide personal and nursing care for up to fifty-three older people. The home charges fees of £361 per week. As the home provides nursing care the free nursing care element of the funding is provided in addition to the costs charged to the resident. What the care home does well During the visit the residents were pleasantly occupied in the lounge and dining room. There was an activity with local school children and a number of them were enjoying taking part or observing what was happening. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 12 What we found: The reason for this inspection was to ensure people in the home were well supported following information received that staff may not be receiving there due wages and the outcome is as follows: Eileen Thompson, the manager (unregistered) was in charge. She was aware of issues with staff not receiving their full wages and confirmed a company manager provided this information. The current occupancy is 30 people and sufficient care staff were employed to ensure their needs could be met. The food store was inspected and although the delivery of some comestibles was expected, there was sufficient to ensure residents could be sustained over the weekend. Staff spoken with acknowledged that they had been told they would only received 50 of their pay and gave reassurances that they would cover shifts as necessary.
