What the care home does well When we did our last Annual Service Review we did not require the Registered Provider to make any particular improvements. However, the Registered Provider has developed the Service further. These improvements include the following things. The dining room and one of the bedrooms have been redecorated. New covers have been fitted to the soft furnishings in the lounge. The driveway has been resurfaced. People who live in the Service say that the support workers are kind. They say that they are provided with the support they need in ways that are right for them. People are helped to lead normal lives through responsible risk taking. As part of this, they are supported to develop their independence. This includes going out to participate in occupational activities. It also includes taking part in social events. People are helped to stay in good health. This includes helping with the administration of medication. It also includes arranging for people to receive medical attention as and when necessary. The Service provides a pleasant and comfortable setting in which people can make their home. There is an organised procedure for responding to complaints. Neither we nor theRegistered Provider have received any formal complaints about the Service since our last Annual Service Review. Suitable provision is made to ensure that people are kept safe. This includes having a system to deal with exceptional circumstances when someone may need to have aspects of their liberty restricted. Sensible things are done to promote people`s health and safety. This includes having fire safety equipment that complies with the requirements of the Kent Fire and Rescue Service. It also includes ensuring that the kitchen meets the standards set by the local Department of Environmental Health. What the care home could do better: More could be done to present the individual plans of support in a user friendly way. This might make it easier for people to take an active part in making decisions that affect them. Some support workers are not receiving all of the training that the Registered Provider considers to be necessary. This includes fire safety training. Some of the routine checks of the operation of fire alarm bells are not being completed on time. The Manager says that this oversight will be corrected without delay. Random inspection report

The quality rating for this Service is 2 Star. This means that the people who use this Service experience good quality outcomes. We arrived on an unannounced basis at the Service at about nine oclock in the morning. Our inspection took about two hours to complete. It was a focused look at key areas of how well things are going. We took into account information provided by the Registered Provider in its self assessment. This is called the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (the Assessment). We received it on time. Parts of the Assessment have not been completed in adequate detail. Further, we considered any information that we have received about the Service since our last Annual Service Review. We did this on 25 November 2009. This was an office based activity when we examined all of the evidence we had at that point about how things were going in the Service. During our inspection, we spoke with the Manager and with one of the support workers. We spent time with two of the people who live in the Service while they were getting ready to go out. We looked at a selection of key records and documents. These included things like the individual written plans of support, medication records, staff rosters, staff training records, health and safety certificates and accident records. We also looked at quality assurance questionnaires completed by the people who live in the Service for the Registered Provider. What the care home does well:
