Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: The reason for this inspection was to assess compliance with the requirement made in the Statutory Requirement Notice, dated 6 April 2010. A Statutory Requirement Notice is a legal notice, which is served on the provider when there has been a breach of regulations. The notice describes which regulations have been broken and what the provider must do to put right the breach; it also gives the date by which this must be done. We then follow up the notice by visiting the service to make sure that actions have been taken to meet the requirements and regulations. The requirement in this notice was made to make sure that residents health was not at risk from poor medication practices. The service were required by 19 April 2010 to: 1. Have a system in place to ensure that all medication is safely administered to service users, and that the practice of secondary dispensing is stopped. During this inspection we looked at where medicines were stored, the medication handling policy and procedures, watched two nurses giving people their medicines and talked to the manager and these nurses. The manager told us that the practice of secondary dispensing had stopped and that all medicines were given directly to people living in the home. She also told us that all medicines in current use, including liquid medicines, were now stored in the drug trolleys. What we saw whilst we were in the home would support her statements. The written safe medication handling procedures were looked at. These had been updated to reflect the change in practice. We watched two nurses giving medicines to people. Both nurses followed safe practices. In addition people were treated with respect and dignity. The nurses explained to people what they were giving them and people were given the time that they needed to take their medicines. From this visit it is clear that action has been taken to meet the requirement of the statutory requirement notice.
