The home did not know that we would be visiting. We conducted a full key inspection of the service in November 2009 and issued two requirements for improvements to be made - 1) The medication administration recording charts should be signed by the member of staff administering medications to people. This will ensure that an accurate record is made of the administration of medications and will reduce the risk of errors occurring 2) You must make sure access for authorised personnel is available for inspection of staff files upon request. This will ensure that at all times records are available for inspection by authorised persons, to confirm that robust recruitment procedures are in place. We looked at a selection of medication administration charts (MAR) and spoke with the shift leader and acting care manager. The staff explained the process used to ensure that a safe system for the administration of medication is used. This will reduce the risk of errors occurring. The MAR sheets appeared to be completed correctly we saw no gaps in the recording. Additionally staff complete a daily audit to check the number of tablets remaining and the accuracy of the procedures. The shift leader and the acting care manager both confirmed that only the nominated staff administers the medication, both external and internal preparations and signs the MAR accordingly. The acting care manager has made arrangements for the personnel files to be available when requested during the inspections. This ensures that the files can be stored securely but accessible when required. We selected two staff personnel files to look at the recruitment procedures. The files were well presented and contained the information required to safeguard the people living at Sandylee. We consider that the necessary action has been taken to comply with the two requirements.
