Annual Service Review Page 2 of 7 Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included The annual quality assurance assessment that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The registered manager returned an annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA). The self assessment identified areas that had improved in the last year and others where further developments were being planned, which would benefit people using the service. The last key inspection was carried out 23rd March 2008 and an annual service review was completed 23rd January 2009. The service continues to operate a structured admission procedure, which would involve carrying out a pre admission assessment prior to anybody moving into the home ensuring that the service will be able to meet their needs, although there have no new people admitted into the home in the last year. Each person has a person centred care plan and health action plan in place. People are able to choose their preferred gender of staff , that they wish to support them with their personal support and activities. This is reflected in their person centred care plan. People are encouraged and supported to live as independent life as possible, while ensuring their safety by having risk assessments in place, which are regularly reviewed and updated. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 A social and health care professional surveyed said, The service promotes the independence of service users as much as possible. The AQAA has identified that one person goes out and about in the community independently and has their own mobile phone so that they are able to contact the home in the event of an emergency for support and advice. People are supported to maintain relationships with their family and friends and one person is supported to visit their girlfriend. People are able to entertain their visitors in the home who can visit at any time. People continue participate in the running of the home, which includes household chores, cooking and shopping.People are involved in choosing the daily menu and participating in shopping. People continue to participate in a range of education recreational and social activities, which meets with their preference and choice. One person has chosen to attend a further education class at a local college and some people attend local day service provisions. People enjoy activities including, going swimming, bowling, horse riding, cycling, having meals out, trampolining and visiting cinemas. All people have been away on weeks holiday. People have also joined various clubs with in the community including, horse riding club, social clubs, leisure centre and advocacy groups. We received some surveys from people who live in the service who had been supported to complete these by persons external to the home. Feedback indicated that people are able to to do what they want to do during the day, evening and a weekends. One person said, The home has good food and is nice and warm. A relative surveyed said, The home provides a very welcoming, warm environment for the clients, it is for them a real home and there are plenty of activities. The Service has a complaints procedure in place, which is compiled in a format to assist peoples understanding and is provided to each person. Over the last year the service has not received any complaints. The service has safeguarding vulnerable adults from abuse procedures in place and information supplied in the AQAA states that the manager intends to ensure that there are local guidelines in place ensuring that they are aware of their roles and responsibilities. Staff also continue to receive safeguarding training . Since the previous annual service one matter was referred following the local authority safeguarding vulnerable adults from abuse procedures. This matter pertained to an incident between two people living in the service, which did not result in further investigation taking place. People live in a home that is safe and well maintained. Over the last year a worn carpet has been replaced in the entrance hall with non- slip tiles. Peoples individual bedroom furniture has been replaced, new bed linen, curtains, mats and pictures have been purchased with peoples involvement. People living in the service continue to benefit from a stable staff team, where turnover is low and some members of staff have worked in the home for a number of years. Information supplied in the AQAA states that staff have attended all mandatory training and they have received pain recognition training. The AQAA has also identified that Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 they need to arrange staff training in behaviours that challenge and dementia awareness to meet the needs of a specific individual. The service is also currently looking for a trainer to deliver equality and diversity training to staff. Members of staff surveyed said, that they have the skills and enough experience to support the needs of people living in the service. A relative surveyed said, The staff are kind and well trained to meet the needs of residents. The home continues to be run by an experienced registered manager. The previous annual service review identified that the manager needs to make arrangements for a person to deputise in their absence. The manager has informed this arrangement was put in place, however this member of staff no longer works in the service, but arrangements are in place for another person to be available. A relative surveyed said, The manager is very dedicated and caring. The AQAA states that the service holds regular consultation meetings with people to assist them to exercise choice and control over their lives. The service uses appropriate means of communication for each person to aid their understanding such as pictures and objects of reference. Health and safety is considered in the AQAA. Health and safety audits are carried out , regular fire drills are conducted and regular servicing and maintenance of equipment takes place. The home continues to inform the Commission of any relevant events that have occurred in the home since the last inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown their service continues to provide excellent outcomes for people living there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and we will do a key inspection by 28th March 2011 However we can inspect the service at anytime if we have any concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of people using the service Annual Service Review Page 6 of 7 Reader Information Document Purpose: Author: Audience: Further copies from: Annual service review CQC General Public 0870 240 7535 (national contact centre) Our duty to regulate social care services is set out in the Care Standards Act 2000.
