Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The information used as part of this Annual Service Review included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that the service sent us. The AQAA is a self assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for the people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. Four surveys provided by people living at the service or their relatives. Information we have about any complaints and safeguarding received about the service. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Information provided by the registered individual about their monthly checks of the service. Information obtained during consideration of the services application to vary their registration. What has this told us about the service? The service is now registered to take up to ten people with dementia care needs. The service is making changes to be able to meet these needs including the provision of extra staffing if needed, staff training as well as additional procedures and making some changes to the environment to promote peoples safety. The service provided us with an AQAA that told us about the service. The service confirms it continues to undertake pre admission assessments to ensure they can meet peoples needs. The service tells us that it treats people as individuals meeting their health and personal care needs. Responses to our surveys tell us that people think that their needs are always or normally met. The service tells us that it works with other health care professionals to meet peoples needs. It states that since becoming part of the Integrated Care Pathway for the Dying Programme with the specialist nurse their care for end of life care has continued to improve. Comments from people at the service or their relatives include: Excellent staff- kind and caring. Caring staff and supportive to families and The nursing care my mother gets is second to none. The staff are always friendly, polite and accessible when required. The service tells us that it listens to people that live there and their relatives and act on any concerns raised. It tells us that it has made changes following listening to people. These include changes to the menus, changes to seating and alterations to the activity programme. The service tells us that it has not received any complaints since the last key inspection. We, the commission, have not received any complaints either. The service states that it promotes peoples difference. People are supported to have their spiritual needs met and the service provides monthly religious services. Some people are visited by their own religious leader. People can also have a preference over the gender of carer that supports them. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The service tells us that it support people to make choices over how they live their life. For example people can eat their meals where they wish, sit where they want either in their rooms or in the communal rooms and can choose whether to take part in activities. People can bring in their own possessions. People are also supported to take part in community activities such as attending local churches and going to a local community group. Improvements have been made to the environment. Some bedrooms and the hallway has been decorated. Signage has been introduced to support people with dementia to orientate themselves to the building. The AQAA tells us that there is increased staffing in the morning and evening to better meet peoples needs. Our surveys did indicate that some people feel that staff are not always available to them and hopefully this increase in staff should address this. The service tells us that staff have received training to meet peoples needs. They also say that more people have achieved an accredited qualification. Training has been provided in dementia care. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? In the light of the service now admitting people with dementia care needs we will consider doing a key inspection before April 2011. We can, however, inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
