The visit was carried out by a pharmacist inspector. It lasted two hours and involved speaking with the senior carer on duty. We checked the current medicines stocks, medicines records and care plans and we gave feedback to the manager by phone. We found the medicines records and stock to be well-organised and securely kept. Records of medicines received into the home and given to people were usually complete and there was a good system in place that made it simple to account for all medicines that were received into the home. Running stock balances of all medicines were kept on the records, which helped show medicines were being given to people correctly as prescribed. However, when we checked a further sample of the records dating back over the last year we found some discrepencies and recording mistakes. A recent course of antibiotics for one person was not clearly recorded because the name of the medicine was not written onto the records and there were some gaps where staff had forgotten to sign when giving it. The carer on duty confirmed it was an antibiotic that should be given before food but this was not highlighted on the records, which means it could have been given at the wrong time. On another persons record we found several recording mistakes when staff had signed the records by mistake even though they had not given the medicine. This same person had recently went without one of their medicines for two days because new stock had not been obtained in time. The manager said that this had happened because the pharmacist usually ordered the medicines and so staff rarely saw the original prescriptions, ordering the medicines and seeing the signed prescriptions helps make sure medicines are correct and helps make sure new supplies are obtained in time. We looked at how visits to the doctor and other health professionals were organsied and recorded. We found clear detailed records and good systems in place for reminding staff to organise checks ups and health reviews. We found good information about the current medicines and what they were used for and this was clearly presented so staff understood how to give them safely. We looked at the arrangements for handling controlled drugs and found no formal procedures in place. Although nobody was prescribed controlled drugs or had been in the past recent changes to the law require all care homes to have suitable storage arrangements in place. Having good arrangements for the handling of controlled drugs helps prevent them being mishandled and misused. We looked at how staff were trained to handle medicines safely. The senior carer on duty said and the manager later confirmed that all staff have attended formal in house medicines training sessions and this was repeated every year. Regular training helps make sure staff have the necessary skills to handle medicines safely. What the care home does well: Medicines can be fully accounted for because the records and stock are well organised, this helps show that they are being given to people correctly.
