What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we had received or asked for since the last key inspection which was carried out on 17th June 2007. This included: The annual Quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a selfassessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical data about the service. Surveys returned to us by staff from the home. The previous key inspection. Other information we have been told about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA), which was clear and gave us information about what they are doing now and what they want to do in the future. They told us how they had progressed from the last key inspection. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing an excellent service. They told us about how they have met issues relating to Equality and Diversity. This includes the following:Each person who lives at Tanglewood has a care plan that details all of their needs and preferences. These include race, gender, disability and communication, sexuality, age, and religious preferences. We hold two meetings a year for each Deaf blind person where we discuss their preferences and needs. These meetings are multi disciplinary meetings and aim to have a wide and useful debate about each persons wishes and preferences. Gender is taken into consideration at all times when recruiting staff and producing rotas. Tanglewood employs a Practice Development Worker. This person is responsible for ensuring that the special needs of all of the deaf blind people are met. This includes completing assessments on key areas of peoples lives such as vision and hearing, communication, health, mobility and their learning needs. As a result of the assessments the care plans include guidance for staff on how to offer each person the specialist support that they require. For example, each person has mobility guidelines that advise staff on how best to support the person to independently move around their environment and how to give them all of the information that they require to be independent. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Tanglewood has promoted the learning of British Sign Language within the staff teams. This has enabled the whole team to improve their communication skills with
Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 each other, deaf service users and other deaf people, we have added this to our staff meetings and we practice signing as a group. We have also started a Hand under Hand signing session to improve the working practice of the staff to enable better support of the people who live at Tanglewood. As an organisation we have a Cultural Diversity Group who meet to discuss the needs of the people that we support and pass on information about local events or meetings, our PDW is part of this group. The information contained within the AQAA also confirms that, through the staffing group employed, the home reflects the diversity of the people who use the service. Tanglewood has also supported 58 of its work force to complete NVQ at level 2 or above. The organisation has a good management structure and quality assurance mechanism, which ensures standards are maintained and enhanced through continual scrutiny and monitoring. This helps to safeguard and improve the quality of life of those people who use the service. This quality assurance system is in place in all Sense homes in Birmingham and ensures that managers skills are transferable across different homes. Internal audits take place annually, these are completed by the managers and/or by the policy and quality audit team. These include getting feedback from stakeholders and deaf blind people where possible. People using the service are consulted about the service. The AQAA tells us how this is done and includes: We have structured and tailored individuals schedules of activity to what they have shown a preference for. If an individual is unable to communicate their preference to us then as a Multi-Disciplinary team we have identified from individual observations what people seem to enjoy or not enjoy. We have had one person come into the service since our last inspection so we have ensured that the transition has been a success. We ensured that the person had a voice through this process and that any negative effects to people living at Tanglewood were minimised. We have sourced new activities for people to experience and have changed the times and days of planned activities to suit the individuals at Tanglewood. We have arranged and been on individual and group holidays with the people who live at Tanglewood, holidays last year included a large House in Westward Ho in Devon. The house that we rented suited the individuals perfectly with an on site pool, Jacuzzi, gym and access to woodland walks, a trip to Euro Disney for 2 people, this was a major success and our first trip abroad, a 1:1 holiday to Spain on a site that caters for disabled people and an other 1:1 holiday to the Derbyshire Dales so one person could meet up with their family. We have made alterations to the environment to benefit the people at Tanglewood, such as providing more equipment in the activity room for people to access, these include a Perkins Brailler, a range of art materials, tactile games, a soft play area and a keyboard. We have also made alterations to the external environment such as putting in additional hand rails where needed, purchasing new garden furniture and a swing seat
