It is owned and managed by the Tyne & Wear Autistic Society (TWAS), which operates several care and educational services for children and adults in Sunderland. The Court is a family-sized detached property in a quiet area near the City centre of Sunderland. It is indistinguishable from similar surrounding family houses, including the neighbouring 2 houses which are also small care homes operated by TWAS and managed by the same registered manager. The house has a short driveway and a car porch for the home vehicle. There is a small front garden and an enclosed, private back garden. The house has an open hallway, off which there are a comfortable main lounge, dining room and well-equipped kitchen. There is another smaller lounge leading off from the kitchen. On the first floor there are 3 generously-sized bedrooms, a bathroom, toilet, and the small staff sleep-in room. The quality of furnishings and decoration are of a very good standard throughout the house. The house does not offer accommodation for people with mobility needs, though arrangements can be made for visitors with such needs to access the ground floor.

What the care home does well People can take as long as they need to decide if they want to live in the house. People are asked about what they need. And a lot of information is collected before people move in to make sure their needs can be met. The home supports people to have interesting lives and people living at the home are being introduced to new activities and experiences to help them lead more fulfilled lives. People living at the home are supported to learn or renew self help skills to help them become more independent in aspects of every day living. The house is clean and comfortable and well maintained. Staff help people keep in touch with their families. There is a good level of staff training. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: An unannounced visit to the home took place on 10th May at 13:55 At the time of the visit two people who live at the home were on a lunch break from college which they attend daily. Two members of staff were on duty at the time. People said they were very happy living there at the home and the home was very comfortable. People said they were encouraged to be involved in making decisions e.g about what to eat, where to go out. Comments from people living at the home include: I enjoy playing games and the home is well furnished. The Court is nice I like the food. I like my bedroom and the sensory room. Comments from staff include: The Court provides an excellent service for the individual needs of the service user. The staff are good at supporting each other and at promoting the independent living skills of householders. The Court provides a well structured environment using a 24 hour curriculum. There is friendly and homely atmosphere. The Court provides high standards of care to people living at the home.
