What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. Eight surveys were received prior to the annual service review. What has this told us about the service? The manager returned the annual quality assurance assessment which gave us all the information we asked for. It is extremely well detailed and gave good clear evidence of how the service has been managed since the last inspection carried out in November 2008. The manager has worked at the home for several years and is well qualified and competent to manage the home. She is also an NVQ Assessor and encourages staff to undertake this vocational training in care. Staff said in the surveys that they receive regular supervision and support from the manager for them to meet the needs of the residents with mental health needs. One stated that the home has a harmonious atmosphere, and provides excellent care and support to the residents. The manager said that new people who are admitted to the home generally visit with their social worker or a family member to meet staff and other residents before making up their mind to move in. Everyone has their care needs assessed beforehand to ensure the service is right for them. People living at the Hollies and Holly Lodge have told us that staff treat each resident as individuals and encourage them to develop their own life style, to continue with their hobbies and trips out. Each resident has a Key Worker allocated to them, who reviews the care needs, maintaining a professional relationship, going that extra mile for them. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 The manager said that the residents are invited to attend regular meetings to discuss menu choices, outings, activities and special parties. One of these meetings resulted in the development of the garden for those residents who enjoy gardening, are now involved in growing flowers and vegetables. The Hollies has large grounds surrounding the home and the manager said that they are planning to keep chickens and horses. The manager said in the AQAA that the service has regularly been underfunded in the past and has had this reviewed recently, allowing for further development and improvement to the environment. Most of the bedrooms and communal rooms have been redecorated, the managers office has been relocated to a more central location, the acquisition of new garden furniture and raised flower beds having been developed. There has always been a good clear recruitment programme when employing new staff, and the staff turnover remains consistently low showing a degree of stability within the staff team. Staff receive regular training following on from the induction programme, for them to be able to meet the needs of people with mental health needs, as well as needs for older people. There is a high percentage of the staff having achieved the National Vocational Qualification in care (NVQ) showing a consistently high standard of care and support to residents. The manager continues to let us know about things that happen at the home and contacts the Care for Quality Commission (CQC) for advice to ensure they manage their issues well. The manager deals with any complaints that are raised in a professional manner and lets the Inspector know of any major concerns. Our judgement resulting in the information showed that the home continues to provide an excellent service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection within three years of the last Key Inspection. However, we can inspect at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 5 Reader Information
